Keith Bown, 42, a horse buyer from Chariton, was treated at Iowa Lutheran hospital after a fall from an eleventh story window at Hotel Kirkwood caused multiple fractures. He is kept for observation but doctors say he is no longer in danger.
District soil conservation service officials sign leases for an East Pottawattamie County CCC camp on an 8.3 acre Dr. R. G. Smith estate plot by the Nishnabatna river. Estimated construction coal reaches 42,000 dollars. The camp will house over 176 men and open during the summer.
Ellis Craig of New Sharon, a farm hand, was jailed after his car struck and killed 65 year old Rupert Shoemake at a minor collision scene. Sheriff Fritz Van Genderen said charges of reckless driving or manslaughter may be filed against Craig. The incident occurred as Craig stopped in response to a signal.
The Iowa Volunteers held its annual pre Decoration Day memorial service at First Baptist Church Cedar Rapids led by a parade from the armory. Dr. Harry M. Gage president of Coe College was the speaker.
From the dwindling ranks of the boys in blue two special guests of honor attended a Sunday morning memorial at Asbury Methodist Church in Des Moines. They were T. J. Noll adjutant general of the Iowa Grand Army of the Republic and J. J. Neuman state G. A. R. commander.
President John O Gross of Simpson College announces Ed Mund J Marty of Appleton Wisconsin as director of the Simpson College band and instructor in public school music for the coming year Marty holds a bachelor of music from Lawrence College Observatory and a master's in music from Northwestern University where he has been studying the past year.
Two hundred eighty five Knights of Columbus members attended a ceremonial and banquet. Bishop Rohiman of Davenport delivered the sermon at St James church. Washington council led first and second degree work with Rev. George Rowland and District Deputy Gus Pusateri directing. The event drew visitors from multiple cities and included honorary memberships for Edward Sullivan and George Wheelan.
Four Boy Scouts named by department musician Jesse Radda of the Iowa VEF will march with the firing squads on Memorial Day. Their fathers are veterans, and they will sound taps at designated cemeteries assigned by the committee.
Edward B. Jackson, 89, died yesterday morning after a period of illness. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 PM at the Methodist church, with Dr. R. C. Keagy officiating. Burial follows in Elm Grove cemetery. Arrangements by L. A. Jones. He was born April 28, 1851 in Frederick City, Maryland, and lived in Lincoln and Iowa before settling in Washington. He is survived by sons Charlie William and John K., daughters Edna Quinn, Emma Wolfe, Minnie Knapp, Christa Bear, and Clarence Jackson, plus a sister and a brother, and several grandchildren.
Rev Carl W Klein addressed Washington high school and junior college graduates at a baccalaureate service in the Methodist church. He argued that forgetting selfish aims and serving others leads to lasting happiness, tying the message to current life and international relations.
Elm Grove memorial road completed and to be dedicated after Memorial Day service at Elm Grove cemetery. Plantings funded by Fortnightly Club Garden department led by Mrs. B F Bostwick Jr with community support and city county cooperation. Donors include Mrs A Anderson Red Oak and many local groups with multiple memorial plantings and sponsors.
The Iowa state executive council authorized Adjutant General Charles A. Grahl to travel from Alexandria to Washington to discuss with War Department officials the creation of a national guard air squadron. The council also sent Major Guy D. Thompson to Chicago to inspect horses for the 114th Cavalry Regiment.
A large crowd attended the Memorial Sunday service at the Presbyterian church in Washington yesterday. Patriotic organizations were represented and Dr F W Eastwood gave a sermon titled The World of Tomorrow. Special music featured harpist Paul Pry and baritone Daryl Fetters with the choir and organ.
Former President Herbert Hoover will address the nation via NBC radio at 7 30 p m central time tonight on national defense. His office said the talk would cover the organization required for real defense.
County officials refused a license for the Joe Morris exhibit after determining it was not purely educational. Sheriff M Putnam and County Attorney Richard Stewart said representatives had claimed an educational nature in Washington but failed to demonstrate it, leading to a prohibition by the board of supervisors and possible arrest for the troupe.
