Chicago traders saw another frenzied close on the Chicago board of trade as corn prices climbed two to four cents. Short session trading remained spirited with the weekend close near noon as the pit filled with eager buyers and tickets lagged behind the last hour’s prices. Wheat fluctuated with corn and ended the day slightly below the previous close.
William Alexander Stephen age 71 died at 8 15 pm at his son Homer's home in Keota where he had lived since fall He was born October 7 1855 in Oregon township near Ainsworth He married Fannie Green in 1854 and lived in Keota for decades Surviving are son Homer Washington brother Samp Stephen Keota sister Mrs Er G Wilson Washington and two half sisters Mrs Grace Arnold Keota and Mrs Daisy Butler Oklahoma City Funeral services Sunday at 3 pm at the Keota Methodist church with Rev C B Rayhill and burial in Keota cemetery He was a longtime drayman in Keota and a respected community member.
More than 5600 people visited the high school display of manual training and sewing work from the past year. The manual shop showcased buffets radio cabinets desks and cedar chests reflecting skilled craft. Exhibits included mechanical drawing books by classes under W F P Bickel and J A Mehinstry with Bickel leading tours assisted by Vehinstr y.
Reports say a serious tornado struck between Columbia and Moberly with damage in Harrisville Yates Sturgeon and Salisbury. Communication lines are down and four people were reported killed at Yates.
Hundreds gathered at the Washington Kirth school for the annual May fete staged by high school girls and four grade schools. Es telle Davidson crowned May queen after a season themed program featuring nation dances, American scenes, and a varied finale with the May pole.
Henry Ford reveals an entirely new Ford model with speed style and control. The current Model T remains the main production for replacement and service to 10 million U.S. owners. Details will follow and a model will appear soon under Ford’s quality and service emphasis. Washington Motor Company.
A crowded display in the small exhibit room showcased house dresses aprons and feminine apparel crafted by Washington High School girls under Miss Rachel Fabrick. The large attendance showed local interest in two practical courses directed by capable staff with students making good progress over the year.
Washington will hold Decoration Day events next Monday with a park program at 9 and a drive to Woodlawn and Elm Grove cemeteries for graves to be decorated. A rain option moves services to the Y M C A community room. A parade forms at 10, with G A R, Boy Scouts, D A R, American Legion and auxiliary groups and school children marching in two sections to Woodlawn and Elm Grove cemeteries.
A sharp tremor hit the San Francisco Bay Area and San Mateo peninsula at 9:39 AM with considerable local excitement but no damage reported. Professor Parry Byerly’s instrument at the University of California recorded the quake from 9:39 to 9:48 AM with an estimated epicenter about 5 miles away in an undetermined direction.
Washington high school athletes presented coach J A McKinstry a double fountain pen set as a token of esteem for his four years as athletic director. Wayne Weaver led the senior committee in the presentation amid widespread regret that McKinstry will not return next year.
Ruth Mohr won first prize of two dollars, Willa Briley took second for one dollar, and Tommy Duncan earned a third prize box of cane. Honorable mention went to Jack Lytle and Helen McConnanel. other contestants included Henrietta Hull and several others. Posters are on display at the Chocolate Shop for the poppy sale to aid hospitalization work.
Captain Charles A. Lindbergh lands at Revere Airport in Brussels and is greeted by King Albert who decorates him with the Order of Leopold. He plans to dine with Prince Leopold and stay at the American embassy as crowds cheer and diplomats greet the famed aviator.
Cards distributed in Washington schools invite enrollment in a free YMCA swimming school June 6 to 11. Children must submit a parent signed permission card. The program, directed by Harry Kreider and aided by Victor Mastin and Anna Kneitnerus, will replace regular classes during the session.
The employees of the American Pearl Button Co. will publish a formal statement addressing the controversy between labor and management in May in this newspaper column.
Dr N Stryker of Towayty will serve another year as president of the Town Osteopathic Association after a re election at the convention. New officers include Dr Rolla Hook of Logan as vice president and Dr J B Gilmore of Sioux City as secretary and treasurer. Clinics will be held at Des Moines General Hospital prior to adjournment.
Kalona contributed 175 to the Washington county flood relief fund, part of a third remittance bringing the total to 690. County records show countywide donations nearing 3 450 to date with about 60 still on hand to complete a 100 goal. Contributions may be left at Washington banks for forwarding to Red Cross HQ in St Louis.
