Nathan Leopold declined to testify before a coroner's jury investigating the murder of Deputy Warden Peter Klein at the state prison. He said he would incur the enmity of other convicts after witnessing the slaying from a solitary confinement cell.
P J Stryker from Kirksville Missouri visits in town with parents W R Stryker and remarks Missouri leads Iowa in road development He notes 20 miles of highway graveling near Kirksville and an ongoing graveling program east and west He cites a 30 million dollar annual road improvement investment and claims Missouri will pave primary roads eventually His wife joins the visit.
Obituary notice from Wayland reports the death of Homer C. Stuart age 26 at his home after influenza and typhoid fever. He was born in Washington, lived in Wayland since youth, and leaves a widow, two daughters, and a brother Ralph. funeral plans not announced.
Eddyville Ky May 28 three men one negro were electrocuted at the state penitentiary in a triple execution. Elihu Stone 41 killed Dr Marvin Kingins Ed Lake 32 Louisville who killed his wife and Mr Mary Smith then shot himself and John Baker a negro killed his wife. The men walked to the chair and were pronounced dead within twenty minutes. Witnesses included Dr Kingins brothers Paul and Carroll and a brother in law N C Hancock. Some had joined churches the day before. Six men were sentenced to death but three were granted stays by Governor Fields.
The demise of the thoroughbred Apology and three poisoned horses exposed a nationwide gambling scheme with thousands of dollars at stake. Two gamblers were arrested and confessed, implicating three others. a fifth man tied to a prior poisoning case is sought. The fraud halted the Exposition Park feature race. Frank Marion of Utica and B Lever of San Antonio claimed a $1,000 bet goal, while investigators probe broader ties to Chicago Detroit and St Louis bookmakers.

Baltimore May 28 A committee of fifteen to the assembly of the Presbyterian church US A stressed need for greater harmony and clearer rights for presbyteries under the general assemblies. The report notes internal divisions between fundamentalists and modernists and calls for freedom of thought within constitutional bounds. It defines toleration as extending fellowship to ministers with views not essential to the faith.
Senator Cummins plans a radio address to Iowa voters in the primary, with a tentative link between Station WOC Davenport and Washington from 9 30 to 10 p m. The plan hinges on wire facilities and travel constraints keep him in Congress. Brookhart supporters seek a Borah remote radio talk from Washington if needed with Clark scheduled on WOC.
Gravesend Kent May 28 a British town greeted Lieutenant Commander Richard E Byrd U S N the second man to reach the North Pole He arrived by steamer Chantier from Spitzbergen with pilot Chief Petty Officer Bennett The Byrd expedition began a 1400 mile overland flight to the Pole in the airplane Joseph Ford and returned in about 15 12 hours on May 9.
A definite project proposes through railway service between England and Russia using huge steam ferries to carry trains across the North Sea and Gulf of Finland. Reports also note a promising silver strike near Fort McMurray Alberta and platinum near Fort Smith, prompting prospectors to trek to both centers.
Wallace school held a four o'clock May festival with all students participating. The Queen of May, Dawn Mary Katherine Glascock, crowned amid dances by brownies and fairies. Children wore colorful costumes representing nations and crafts, including Sunbonnet Girls, Greeks, Indians, and Japanese participants.
Mexican federal forces in Vera Cruz state hunt bandits led by Vidal Tenoria to rescue John J. Shanklin of Canyon Texas and four other Americans held by outlaws. Shanklin faced a 6 pm deadline for a ransom of 20 000 pesos while two other Americans Briggs and Greeley were held in the Tampico oil region.
Walter Brown spoke at the Graham theater urging Washington County farmers to support the proposed bond issue for gravel roads on Primary day. He cited a 8 mill levy estimating 15.4 cents per acre as the average farmer cost, and noted a similar plan in Jasper County which passed.

George Jansky, Lillian Vozon, Mildred Fajamon, and Martha Killian join adoptive families, while others from Washington return with Miss Mehling for a brief visit before departures.
In Washington on May 28 the Northern Baptist convention adopted a six month truce on controverted sub sets and faced a split vote between avowed fundamentalists and a slate from the nomination committee. The Washington high school senior class play The Goose Hangs High impressed a large Washington crowd with a well cast ensemble, refined direction by Miss Bernadine Neville, and natural makeup. Led by Max McCall, Carolyn McCleery, Annetta McGinnis, and David McCreedy, the show earned praise for strong performances and thoughtful staging. The night featured supporting turns by Josephine Bailey, Myrtle Edwards, Vaneta Tucker, and others with orchestra music by Milburn McKay.
A Chicago committee plans a five year scientific study of human behavior and aims to raise 275000 to fund the project. The effort focuses on behavioral research and related social science considerations within the city.
An 80 acre farm near Tiffin Iowa was sold this week for fifty thousand dollars, equating to six hundred twenty five dollars per acre. The sale was reported by The Associated Press from Iowa City on May twenty eight.
