The first of several extension elections begins Tuesday May 31 to name members of the Washington County Agriculture Extension council. Meetings start at 8 p.m. in Jackson Township at the Jackson Center school and in Washington Township at the Farm Bureau building, with two candidates to be presented at each meeting. CIO Rejects Ford Offer of Contract
The CIO United Auto Workers rejected Ford’s half million dollar contract offer and ordered 135000 Ford workers to be ready for a possible strike next Tuesday night. Union leaders said Ford refused major economic demands and would not discuss annual wages or more than a minimal stock sharing plan. The strike threat follows Ford's rejected 37 cent hourly pay boost and a stock purchase proposal at half price with a guaranteed floor. Ford’s contract ends June 1 and GM’s ends June 7, with the union reserving the right to extend Ford talks.
