In a surprising move Senator Curtis ruled that the tariff bill must return to conference for decision to conform with Senate rules. The ruling blocks the flexible provision and stalls the second section, forcing a fresh compromise and prolonging the House Senate impasse.
Judge Frank Bechly overruled the plaintiff W G Eldridge's bid for a new trial against Rock Island railway. The March term jury sided with the railroad. Eldridge sought 25000 dollars for injuries from a crossing crash. Also heard were actions in Murphy v Brown foreclosure and a motion to dismiss.
New York report notes Nicolas John sen, skipper of the record-breaking trans-Atlantic German liner Europa, never drinks beer. Born to Frisian parents near Schleswig-Holstein, he spent most of his life at sea, as Frisians are famed tea drinkers and long sea-faring people.
Members of the Washington County Ministerial Association gathered yesterday at Prairie Flower Baptist Church northwest of Washington. The day opened with a social hour at 10:30, a noon dinner served by church women, and an afternoon session with Rev H F Wenk er of Crawfordsville leading devotions and Mrs C S Williams of Washington sharing her South American missionary experiences. President Rev W H Parker of Cotter presided. A joint Washington and Louisa county ministerial meeting is set for Ainsworth on Monday June 9.
Graf Zeppelin will depart Pernambuco Brazil for the United States tomorrow after a five day South American visit. Refueling and provisioning continued as Dr Hugo Eckener announced an early departure. Two new Americans joined the flight crew and passengers at Pernambuco before a planned hop to Havana then Lakehurst New Jersey.
The Rotary Club hosted Pioneer Night with Civil War veterans and local pioneers as guests. A six thirty dinner preceded a program led by Rev. Arthur Henke, featuring quartette music and military exercises. Speakers included A. J. Dawson on Memorial Day and J. B. Crail recalling early Washington County history.
In Des Moines on May 27 a demand was made by Hans Hansen campaign manager for Frank J. Lund for J. C. Lewis president of the state federation of labor to state which senatorial candidate Senator Smith W. Brookhart supports. Hansen said workers with union ties have inquired about Brookhart’s attitude toward Lund’s campaign.
Lieut Col Roscoe Turner begins an east west speed record attempt from Roosevelt Field New York to Los Angeles aboard a Lockheed monoplane. He tops the trip with a refueling stop at Wichita Kansas reporting 12 44 p m eastern daylight time arrival. Gilmore the lion cub accompanies him. The current record is 19 hours 10 minutes 32 seconds set by Captain Frank Hawks last June.
Mrs Winnie Palmer county superintendent announces 131 boys and girls finish rural school courses this year and will receive certificates at graduation at Washington High next Saturday at two. Supt J H Peet to deliver address with a program of class numbers songs and diplomas.
Washington May 27 The first reform from the law enforcement commission was enacted as Prev Hoover signed the Williamson bill transferring prohibition enforcement from the Treasury to the Justice Department. The transfer takes effect July 1 with Attorney General Mitchell assuming enforcement duties previously held by Secretary Mellon. The president also signed seven other bills aimed at prison reform and improving federal prison management and conditions.
Milburn McKay sponsors a summer music program at Washington High School offering instrumental lessons for ten weeks. About two hundred students from tied and fourth grade will join in two groups split by instrument. four sections per group. Notable faculty include Joseph Kitchin Coe College Washington Junior High Dorothy Masson and others. Registration and instrument loans available at the high school gym May 28 with thanks to the superintendent and school board.
Washington May 27 Negotiations on the London naval limitation treaty are postponed to a special senate session after the current one adjourns. Republican Floor Leader Watson signaled the need for a special session following a rump caucus where Johnson opposed and Reed defended the pact. Hoover had urged action before adjournment to avoid delays by the House.
Ministers in cooperation with the Washington school board plan to offer one period per week of religious instruction for sixth to eighth graders next fall. Materials will be standard and approved by both church leaders and the board. Parental approval is required and a questionnaire will determine wishes.
May 27 Oklahoma City fire sweeps the historic Stockyard Coliseum, killing at least four and injuring many as 200 cars stored inside are salvaged. Losses are reported around $500,000 as walls collapse and emergency crews battle intense heat and a hot sun amid traffic jams.
Mexico will send two official delegates to the international congress of mental hygiene in Washington in May. The delegates are Dr. Victor Fernandez Manero and Dr. Rafael Santamarina, both from the department of public education.
Washington High School will send about a dozen athletes to the Fort Madison invitation meet this Friday. Teams from Burlington and other southeastern Iowa schools, plus likely entries from Illinois and Missouri, will compete. Events include quarter and half miles medley two mile relays and the football relay. A cup will go to the winning school along with cups and medals for relays and events. Woodrow Crone was elected captain of the 1981 track team. Basketball captains were not elected this year. coaches will designate captains per game for next season.
