Allied forces advanced 6 miles northeast from Cisterna to seize Cori, a German defenses outpost below Rome, nine miles from Via Casilina, threatening encirclement of 17 Nazi divisions as heavy fighting continued in the area.
S. W. Kaster announced detailed plans for Memorial Day next Tuesday. The 10am parade will lead to Woodlawn and Elm Grove cemeteries for grave decorations. L. A. Jones serves as parade marshal with John Pehler and George Rudiger directing parade sections. Transportation by Claude Tucker and Glenn Mace. School groups, led by Supt. W A Erbe, will participate, marching from downtown to the parade route and cemeteries.
The annual memorial service will be held next Sunday at eleven o'clock at the Christian Tabernacle with Rev. W. J. Stevens delivering the sermon. Patriotic organizations are invited. members should meet at city hall by 10:45 and proceed to the church. Uniforms are not to be worn. soldiers, marines and sailors on furlough are especially invited.
There is a greater need than ever for cars for Memorial Day this year. Automobile dealers will not have new cars to use as before the war, and citizens will be depended on to furnish cars and drivers to take decorating committees to the cemeteries. Those who will loan their cars are asked to notify Claude Tucker or G. E. Mace.
Legion Auxiliary sets Saturday poppy sale to honor veterans with the Scott Furniture Store as headquarters. Mrs. Oscar Lane chairs the committee with multiple auxiliary members and junior members aiding, plus Campfire Girls participants. Prizes of 1.75 and 50 cents will reward top sellers.
Stores and offices will close all day Tuesday May 30 for Memorial Day. Claude Tucker of the Chamber of Commerce says food stores lumber yards barber shops department and clothing stores will shut as usual for holidays. Banks libraries MCA courthouse post offices will close with stamp sales only from eight to ten AM.
A county ministerial association will meet next Monday May 29 at the YMCA. Rev. R M McCracken of Crawfordsville will speak at the event.
British and American air offensives against France Belgium and Germany were slowed by poor weather. The Vichy radio claimed Lyon a major rail hub and nearby Etienne were bombed while 7 400 Allied aircraft reportedly dropped 8 000 tons of bombs along a wide arc to the Mediterranean. Photos showed major damage to rail yards at Blainville Sarraguemines Mulhouse Pontarlier and Mets Liege Charlerol Brussels.

United Press reports the Marcus islands assault last Friday and Saturday dropped 148 tons of bombs with four American planes lost. In related actions, planes hit Wake Island damaging airfields and storage while destroying buildings. General Douglas MacArthur is involved in the Pacific operations.

Brighton resident I R Allison dies in Jefferson County Hospital after being struck by Rock Island No 44 while on guard duty near a flooded Skunk River bridge. Survived by wife three sons two daughters and four grandchildren. funeral plans pending at F A Hoskins.
Crawfordsville May 26 Mrs. B. G. McFarland a longtime resident died at 1 25 PM at her home after a week of serious illness Following a paralytic stroke yesterday she suffered a second stroke Funeral arrangements are in progress and her brother Robert Gordon also resided in Crawfordsville
Congressman Thos E Martin will address a Washington audience Friday evening June 2. The Washington County Republican Women's club sponsors the meeting with a dinner at 7 in the Y M C A community room served by the Women's Relief Corps. Dinner plates are 75 cents. Martin just returned from Washington D C and will outline major activities there and take questions. Mrs Mary Beggs leads preparations.
Oliver P. M. Todd died at six o'clock this morning on his 80th birthday at his daughter Mrs August Blaesing's home in Muscatine. He had been ill since December and lived at 823 South Avenue B Washington. Funeral set for 2:30 Sunday at L. A. Jones funeral home with Rev. W. J. Stevens officiating and Elm Grove cemetery burial. He was born May 25, 1864 in Indianapolis and married Susan Batterson February 14, 1886. Surviving: two daughters Mrs Blaesing and Mrs Eva Kelting of Hollywood and two sons Lloyd of Fort Madison and Floyd of St. Louis.
Funeral services for Mrs. William Stout will be held Saturday afternoon at 1 30 o clock in the Brighton Methodist church Rev HK E Vees will conduct the service and burial will be in Sandy Hook Mrs Stout 82 died Wednesday after six weeks illness from two paralytic strokes
Rev Fred E Miller addresses 122 graduates at the rural school commencement held at the Methodist church in Washington County. County Supt Lester B Krabill awards diplomas and urges students to continue schooling and strive for the best as they prepare for future service.

Allied forces in Italy report the 5th Army breaking through on the Celano front to Cisterna after a 44 hour battle. British Canadian and Polish troops take Aquino and Piedimonte while American and French units push along the Appian Way toward Rome. More than 12,900 prisoners taken in 14 days. 56 towns and 78 peaks captured. Cisterna occupied late yesterday with rapid maneuvers from the beachhead.
A senate judiciary subcommittee condemns Attorney General Francis Biddle for alleged erroneous and misleading statements about authority to seize Montgomery Ward & Co. Chicago properties. It also criticizes the NLRB for delaying an election and Secretary Jesse Jones for army seizure calls amid a strike.
Frink was appointed county chairman of the local Cross Work committee amid organizational changes. The move positions Frink to oversee fundraising and community outreach for ongoing relief and support initiatives.
