President Hoover and his cabinet studied the economic situation and issued a one sentence statement that many factors are favorable. The press note marked Mr Hoover’s first direct comment on conditions in months and followed a lengthy cabinet meeting.
A Bellanca twin motor plane crashed two miles north of Glen Ellyn near Chicago today killing four aboard. Pilot Shirley Short co pilot Richard K Peck radio operator Lewis S Rice and mechanic Robert A Gormley died instantly during test flights between Curtiss Reynolds airport and Serena.
The annual commencement exercises for Washington high school and junior college are set for Wednesday at eight o'clock in the Methodist church. Ninety two graduates from the high school and seventeen from the junior college will receive diplomas. President O R Latham of Iowa State Teachers College will deliver the address. An earlier junior senior hand gesture will be held at seven o'clock at the United Presbyterian church. The seniors plan Thursday examinations for all classes except the seniors, who are at the high school this week.
Clinton Grate convict arsonist pleaded guilty to second degree murder for starting the Ohio penitentiary fire that killed 22 people. He and co defendant Hugh Gibbons received life sentences.
Harley Noel of Washington is held in Washington county Jail on a liquor charge. He was arrested last night north of town by Sheriff R H McCarty. A probable hearing would not be held until tomorrow. The charge is illegally transporting intoxicating liquor, according to Sheriff McCarty.
An unsuccessful attempt was made to cash a bogus check at the Montgomery Ward store Saturday evening. The man used a forged Oklahoma Construction Company pay master signature stamp and left town before authorities could locate him.
George Gherman Teas 66 died at 5 30 AM at his home 409 West Washington after ten weeks illness from heart ailment. Born April 21 1865 in Washington he lived here all his life and worked as a blacksmith for more than forty years. Survived by wife Marie Beranek two sisters in New York California and a Crawfordsville step sister. Funeral plans awaiting word from California sisters. Body to Sherman’s home and then return for funeral announcement tomorrow.
Three eighth grade graduates from St James school received diplomas at St James church this morning. Joseph Dougall Teresa Ragan and Geraldine Greiner earned Palmer Method Penmanship diplomas for writing. Father J H Donnell presented diplomas during the mass and benediction with the student body in attendance. Hymns highlighted the service.
Tennessee House votes 71 to 5 to create a five member committee to study grounds for impeachment of Gov. Henry Horton. The panel will review findings of the legislative committee that probed the Horton administration and report by next Wednesday. The action follows criticism over state funds tied up in banks controlled by Rogers Caldwell and Col. Luke Lea, named in the report as dominant in state affairs.
Joe Caccia, driver from Bryan Mawr Pennsylvania, and his mechanic Clarence Grove of Haverford died after their Jones Malay special left the track at the southeast turn during a practice run at the Indianapolis Speedway. The crash marked the first fatal accident of the 1931 racing season and investigators note overdriving on the turn as a contributing factor.
The Rotary club held its regular evening meeting featuring Penn College musicians Miss Wilcox violinist Miss Helen Moore vocalist and Mr Paul Kennedy pianist. The group performed violin numbers sang by Miss Moore and showcased Kennedy’s piano mastery. Afterward Miss Mary Welch and a kindergarten band of about 40 children, with Billy Arnold on drums, presented a playful musical segment followed by a short illustrated lecture on Construction work by Mr D W Moss attended by local Boy Scouts.
Glenn Wagner, owner of a Fredonia restaurant near Columbus Junction, was seriously wounded by his brother Walt Wagner in a morning shooting. A shotgun caused injuries to head and chest. Earl Wagner was jailed by town marshal Orn Jennings and fined. Sheriff George Oakes planned to escort the suspect to the county jail for likely preliminary hearing later in the day.
Memorial Sunday services in Keota honored William Nelson the town’s last Civil War veteran. The Blythe Sheets post of the American Legion and the WR C attended in a service at the Methodist church with Rev. Chamness delivering the sermon. Graves were decorated in three cemeteries Lafayette Center Talleyrand and Tyrone with salutes and floral tributes.

Three East St Louis men named Jack Britt Pat O Connor and Howard Lee arrived in Lincoln under heavy guard to face charges in the Lincoln National Bank robbery of September 17 totaling 2 8 million dollars They were extradited from Chicago after a failed bid to avoid prosecution.

WILL ROGERS mocks a group of U S mayors in a Paris Herald item noting the Rouen bells played the Star Spangled Banner while southern mayors balked until Dixie was played. He jokes of raising funds to bring them home and Chaplin, and clarifies the Los Angeles mayor did not refuse a toast out of discourtesy.

Crawfordsville Supt Walden Smith and Princeton speaker Walter Eastwood join talks on law enforcement and college life as music and prayer mark the gathering. Next meeting set for Crawfordsville in June with nearby associations invited.

Carrie Palmer of Keota and J R Maxwell of Evanston, Ill visited relatives here. Mrs Wes Webster and Mrs Lou Fleming of Wellman shopped today. Dr and Mrs Edward F Wheelan of Riverside visited at the Wheelan home last evening.
The inquest into the deaths of Margaret Summers and three others hears that Thomas Summers, nephew Thomas Myers, William Rieman, and Thomas Lanagan all died of arsenic poisoning. Summers, the beneficiary of multiple insurance policies, denies accusations amid testimony by Dr. Clarence Muehlberger and other officials.
The Washington county court house will close all day Saturday in observance of Memorial Day. Local offices will resume normal hours Monday.
Prizes were given to elementary pupils in the Fortnightly Club Garden department bird composition contest. Judges Mrs. Will Jones Mrs. H J Montgomery and Miss Maud McCreedy named winners from Heights Centennial St James Lincoln schools. First prizes paid $1.00, seconds 75 cents, thirds 50 cents.
