Pleasant Plain Bicentennial Day Planned by Pioneers
The Pleasant Plain Bicentennial Pioneers plan a Saturday program on June 12 to dedicate the bicentennial flag and designate the town a bicentennial community. A 10:30 a.m. parade includes floats antique autos horses and a band with prize categories for decorated bicycles tricycles nursery rhyme characters and bicentennial costumes. Pleads guilty by Fort Madison woman in murder case
Katherine Young, 25, pled guilty to second degree murder in the death of Patricia Talbert, 26, Minneapolis, found in a shallow grave May 25, 1975. Judge Hendrickson ordered a presentence investigation after the charge was reduced from first degree murder. both women worked at the Pipedream Lounge in Fort Madison.

Escaped big foot hoaxer found at resort in California
23-year-old Sherie Darvell of Redding, sought as a captive of the famed Big Foot, reemerged at Bluff Creek Resort near Hoopa frazzled and yelling. Humboldt County sheriff's officials said exposure likely, as 150 deputies and volunteers conducted a ground search Saturday. She was to be examined at Hoopa Medical Center and then moved to Eureka for questioning.

Mid-Prairie arbitration: seniority wins in layoff policy
In Wellman Iowa arbitrator David B Johnson ruled for the Mid-Prairie Education Association over the school board in a staff reduction policy dispute. Choose jurors for Jerry Mark trial
In Woodbury County District Court the jury pool for the murder trial of Jerry Mark continued with extensive juror questioning. Judge Carroll Engelkes estimated a three to four week trial as 52 of 99 prospective jurors sought release and 16 names were drawn for further questioning. The trial, moved from Black Hawk County on a venue change, concerns four counts of murder for the Nov 1 deaths of Leslie and Jorjean Mark and their two children near Cedar Falls. Mark, 33, from Berkley, Calif., has lived in the Cedar Falls area since his arrest. His lawyers may argue he was hundreds of miles away at the time. He married a potential witness, Merrilyn Callenberg, whose testimony the prosecution sought to compel but was blocked by Iowa Supreme Court ruling. The trial has faced multiple delays from April to May.
