Of Thee I Sing director chosen by Washington Community Theatre
Douglas Donald, Arizona native studying directing at Iowa, will lead the fall production of Of Thee I Sing at the Washington Community Arts Center. Auditions set for June 28-29 and July 18-19, with rehearsals starting August 2 and a gala opening October 2. The cast and crew are drawn from the local area including Shayla Jennings and Millie Bordwell. The project mirrors the US bicentennial celebration and may employ up to 100 people. arts center fund drive has fallen to 8000.

Washington High School will confer 166 diplomas at its 106th annual commencement Tuesday night at 8 p.m. in the WHS gymnasium. Three seniors Barbara Frazer Vicki Rae and Paula Shaffer will speak on cycles sand and sea destination the unknown threshold and life is mainly tangled things. Schools Supt E K Schlapkohl and Principal Burge Hammond will present the class and Board President James Gorham will award the diplomas. The invocation will be by Rev Robert Hartzler and benediction by Rev Paul Lobb. Scholarships totaling several thousand dollars will be announced along with choral vocal selections and organist Dwight Brewer.

Two held in shooting at Hill Crest Motel
Kenneth W Lawrence of West Burlington and Gentry Hicks of St. Louis face open murder charges after a motel robbery at the Hill Crest Motel north of Fort Madison. Jerry David Foster, 28, was shot four times while aiding his mother during the robbery and died. Foster's father captured one suspect at gunpoint until police arrived.
