Memorial Day observance at Crawfordsville includes a 10 a.m. service in the school gymnasium with Leo Dunbar of Brighton as speaker and performances by elementary students. The Schantz-Mitchell American Legion post of Crawfordsville sponsors the program.
The annual West Chester alumni banquet will be Saturday June 8 at 6 30 p m in the Captain s Table Washington. Reservations due by June 5 through Mrs Ken Cuddeback Mrs Ken Bauer or Mrs Don J Rich in the Washington area. Invitation cards will not be sent locally.
Three Burlington men were jailed in Henry County after a New London supermarket robbery. Jack McCune Robert Jewell and Daniel Frank are charged with robbery with aggravation for allegedly firing two shotgun blasts and taking about 1700 from Whittaker's Super Market. Fifteen customers were inside. no injuries reported.
Peter Summers Anderson 27 of Chicago is jailed in Decatur County charged with assault with intent to do great bodily injury for stabbing Deborah Colyer 17 of Lamoni with a pencil in the Graceland College student union. Colyer treated for a chest wound. trial set for May 29.
UPI reports State Senator George Milligan accuses opponent David Stanley of silencing Republican voters by refusing to debate. He questions Stanley’s vote against sending an Iowa delegation to protest fertilizer prices and shortages and demands an explanation to farmers for opposing a fertilizer shortage probe.
Stanford California April reports that astronomer Ronald Bracewell believes intelligent beings exist in outer space. He argues spacelings would not view humans as food and cites the prohibitive cost of delivering Earth products to space markets. Bracewell urges sending and receiving messages across vast interstellar distances.
Secretary of State Kissinger returned to Damascus for a make or break meeting with President Assad over a military disengagement plan for the Golan Heights. A high official said key points must be settled tonight to avoid recessing talks. U.N. force size and front-line troop thinning are central issues.
Ivan V. Khonenko, 23, a Soviet seaman with minimal English, was granted asylum in Erie after leaving the freighter Shura Kober with 36 crew members to attend a party. Officials said he may be the first Soviet seaman to jump ship in the United States.
United Press International reports motorists flocked to highways for the 78 hour Memorial Day period amid expectations of adequate gas. The National Safety Council projected 450 to 550 traffic deaths and up to 26 000 disabling injuries, with belts urged to reduce tolls.
Assistant County Assessor Dave Siefkas will ride through Washington County on a farm by farm audit of out buildings and other structures excluding homes and garages. He will update assessment cards by removing torn down buildings adding new unreported structures and adjusting values modestly. The audit covers about 2500 farms in Clay Township and may take several months.
Washington's Municipal Band schedules a 9 a.m. Memorial Day concert in Central Park led by director Lambert Neill. The program features God Bless America This Is My Country Medley of Service Songs Medley of Hymns Onward Christian Soldiers I Am an American and the Star Spangled Banner before the parade.
Watergate special prosecutor Leon Jaworski asks the Supreme Court to decide if the president can resist a subpoena for tapes and documents in the Watergate cover up trial. The move seeks a ruling on executive privilege and judicial process.
A federal grand jury in Des Moines found Monsanto Chemical Co. guilty of restraining trade in pesticides and herbicides. Reed Brothers Inc of Winterset won a verdict of about 59,990 with treble damages to 179,970. The suit claims Monsanto restricted Reed Brothers sales territory and hired a former Monsanto salesman.
An architect outlines a preliminary plan for a Washington County Center for the Creative Arts with a potential $500000 donor gift and a required $200000 local match. Fundraising will intensify by late June, targeting land at the fairgrounds for a 400-seat auditorium, stage, and back-stage facilities for events and displays.
