Washington city officials urge citizens to address nuisances at home such as loose pets and unsightly properties. Mayor Harold Johnson promotes personal responsibility, lists actions for pet owners bicyclists motorists park patrons and calls for continued dog patrols to curb complaints.
Schools in the area including Washington Community Schools will close May 27 for Memorial Day with classes resuming May 28 and students dismissed for the year May 29. Police investigated four break ins overnight with minor losses at Loveless Implement Northrup ring and a basement entry at Mutual of New York Oren Jarvis. Duke Ellington dies at 75 from pneumonia at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center after a respiratory illness.
Washington High School Future Farmers of America members earned honors at the annual Awards Night. Recipients included Jerome Wittetoe, Larry Bohlen Jr, Marty Johnson, Matt Sojka, Steve Jaspering, Jerome Wittetoe, and others for achievements in livestock, public speaking, extemporaneous events, welding, conduct of meeting, secretary’s book, and leadership scholarships.
Memorial Day activities in Washington feature abundant flowers and a parade plan. The report shows fewer fat cattle but larger herds, with fat cattle fed on county farms down from 129,200 head in 1968 to 18,800 in 1972. Beef cow numbers rose 7.3 percent while Iowa totals jumped 26.2 percent. By 1972 twelve thousand five hundred beef cows were in the county, with Highland and Marion leading townships. Factors include high feeder cattle prices, rising grain costs, and capital needs, while improvements cited cover crossbreeding, new hay equipment, and pasture management. The outlook predicts fewer, larger feeding operations and possible cooperatives, with cattle keeping a central role in the county economy.
