The Paris Madrid automobile contest from Versailles to Bordeaux faces cancellation after fatal and serious accidents. A crowd of about 100 watched the start as fixed bayonets lined the route from Ver les. A 3:35 signaling bomb started the race, Charles Jarrett’s car began, and by 3:45 another shot fired. Mme de t, the only woman in the field, drew early attention. Louis Leenwalt led the first stage with a new record pace, while Henri Four’s mark was broken. The Duleina Home for Aged and Indigent Women valued at 38000 was unroofed, twenty other houses and barns in Marshall and Marengo township lost roofs. Telephones failed and the Jackson and Battle Creek Electric railroad bore damage. Injured were Joseph Mugbee and Ernest Burton of Albion, Alexander Skimmer of Marshall, and James Hughes of Marengo. all sustained non fatal injuries from flying debris. An Arbor report notes Hlogensen of the Lewis Institute Chicago winning four firsts and a second in a separate event.

Des Moines reports Mrs Sophia Kruke was bound over for grand jury in Cresco after a preliminary trial for the murder of her husband. His body was found in the Wapsinicon river on April 19 with a stone around the neck. The state alleges she struck him with a pick as he slept and dragged the body to the river.
