Washington County extension director Jim Frier warns 4 miles south of Washington that alfalfa shows widespread alfalfa weevil feeding in tips and foamy spittle masses from spittle bugs. He urges older stands in the southern area to check now and consider early cutting or spraying depending on harvest timing. Insecticides include malathion and others, mixed with water per acre, cost 3 to 6 dollars, and must follow label rates and intervals.

Sheriff Deputies Nab Five Escaped Juves Near Coppock
Two Washington County deputies arrested five escapees from an Illinois state home for juveniles about one mile west of Coppock. They were found driving a stolen car with three televisions and two radios in the trunk and turned over to Henry County authorities. The car was stopped by Warren Schmidt and Yale Jarvis of the sheriff's staff.

Cedar Rapids Airport noted quarter-inch hail with strong gusts. A storage building near Atkins was wrecked, and Emily's Corner Inn window shattered as trees fell.

Inmates seize Cellblock 19 at Iowa State Penitentiary

U.S. Evacuates Women and Children from Laos
UPI reports the United States began evacuating women and children from Laos as anti American demonstrations rose and Communist Pathet Lao gains expanded. Two chartered planes carried 160 people from Vientiane to Bangkok after lengthy U.S. negotiations with student leaders and Pathet Lao officials. More flights were planned as embassy documents were burned to deny intelligence.

One dead and one missing in Davenport mill blast
An explosion at International Multi Foods grain and flour mill in Davenport Iowa killed Ferrel Cleeton 42 and left Leon Robinson missing after two men were swept into the disaster. Fred Rykerd was later rescued from a silo badly burned after a two hour search.
