Poppy Day Planned by American Legion Auxiliary
Saturday May 28 marks Poppy Day nationwide. American Legion Auxiliary members will sell red flowers in Washington with help from Camp Fire Girls at Minick Furniture. The poppy display moved from Minick to Jarvis Appliance Store and will stay thru Saturday. A spokesman urged residents to wear the poppy to honor the war dead and aid veterans.

Rotary Award Given To R. E. Shannon In Washington
Ralph E. Shannon publisher of the Washington Evening Journal received the Rotary Club Community Service Award at the annual banquet held at Washington Country Club. John Winga presented the honor citing Shannon’s lifelong county service and leadership roles with the YMCA school board Chamber of Commerce and Halcyon House project. Shannon has led state press associations and helped establish the local daily paper. The event also featured Richard McCleery’s talk on Africa and its riverine influences and table decorations by local volunteers.

Donald Dean Reason 29, owner of Buffalo Prairie hardware, died from head injuries after a 1960 station wagon crashed into the Crooked Creek bridge on highway 81, two miles northwest of West Chester. Ursa Verling Weston 34 and B J Corbett were injured. Weston unhurt, Corbett with a broken arm. The crash occurred about 11:30 Monday night. Weston was charged with failure to have vehicle under control. Reason died at Washington County Hospital about 1:30 a.m. The county highway death toll for the year rose to three.

Mrs. W. W. Hook born Mary Virginia Walker died at the Eastern Star home in Macon Illinois at age 93. She grew up in Crawfordsville and was daughter of John H. Walker. She belonged to the Eastern Star Rebekahs Daughters of the American Revolution and remained in the Presbyterian Church past 80.
