Soviet spokesman said a statement would be released soon regarding the US Army C47 forced down Friday by Soviet fighters. Nine Americans aboard may be turned over to East Germany, risking a diplomatic wrangle over their release as Washington seeks their freedom.
Izvestia and Pravda accuse President Eisenhower of hypocrisy and warmongering while vowing to keep East Germany out of the crisis until a new summit. Moscow Radio says no separate peace with East Germany without Western talks. Khrushchev backs a treaty only after allied negotiations.
In Philadelphia the PTA opened its 64th annual convention with Mrs. James C. Parker of Grand Rapids stressing that change challenges free citizens. Automation eases work but knowledge growth pressures students as Eli Ginzberg cautions America to engage parents’ growing capability to raise children effectively.
Cecil Horst was elected student body president at Washington High School by a popular vote of local students announced by school officials. He replaces senior Bill Arthur and defeated juniors Ken Hanson and Joe Pollock in the Friday election after Thursday campaigning and the annual convention. Horst is son of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Horst and a National Honor Society member active in football basketball and track.
Washington Junior High students receive awards at the annual Awards Day in the high school auditorium. Seventh grader Carol Jane Grenawalt and eighth grader Bonita Rae Miller won top scholastic honors. Citizenship awards went to Sandra Pearl Hayes and Donald J. Miller. A full list will be published Tuesday.
Des Moines, UP I report Schroeder a Davenport state senator eagerly accepts a debate with William Nicholas, ex lieutenant governor and highway commissioner, over governor race issues. The proposed Friday Shenandoah encounter aims to discuss policy rather than personalities.
Washington Community School District invites all residents to tour the old junior high building Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. The site may be replaced if the bond issue is approved by voters Thursday May 26. No program is planned, but interested residents may visit.
Robert Adams, a former Washington man, died Saturday night at a Denver hospital. His home was Englewood, Colorado. Funeral arrangements are uncertain. the body will be taken to Sherman Eden Funeral Home for rites and burial in a local cemetery.
A violent Chilean earthquake centered on Ancud triggered 30 foot tidal waves and torrential rains, crippling rescue work and killing hundreds across Concepcion to Ancud. Hawaii and California also faced waves with casualties centered in Hilo. officials warned of rising tolls as rescue efforts continued.
City workmen removed the parking curb that marked the street centers around the square after resurfacing. The council ordered removal before repainting parking stalls this spring. A white center line will be painted now, with a future curb type to be installed. A councilman noted protests during the curb’s initial installation and new visitors today to voice concerns about its removal.
President Eisenhower will report to the nation about the summit collapse and the free world’s aims. The White House announced the speech will come from the White House and be broadcast 7 to 7:30 p.m. on ABC and CBS with NBC offering a delayed telecast at 9 p.m. Eastern.
Dayton Countryman, Republican candidate for the U S Senate, argues World Peace as the overriding issue of the era. He says Republicans best keep the peace and favor free enterprise with local and state aid first, plus anti corruption measures in labor unions. He outlines a bio noting Iowa attorney general in 1955 56 and World War I service, living in Nevada with wife Ruth and four children.
United Press International reports six Iowa deaths over the weekend from accidents including four traffic fatalities in other states. Names span Daniel Filson of Monterey California, Donald Minor of Atlantic, Marvin McClintock of Vet ter, Debbie Brinker of Auburn and others in Wisconsin Nebraska and Kansas.
In Tokyo a mass clash outside the Diet left 88 policemen injured, 14 seriously, as leftist students attacked with stones during protests over the U S Japan security treaty. About 1 500 students battled 2 000 police before regrouping at Tokyo Station. Takeo Hayama pledged further militant actions against Kishi and the foreign ministry.
Charles B. Shuman, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, denounced the food for peace surplus program as harmful. He outlined a five point agriculture plan urging elimination of government price fixing and production controls to let farmers adjust to consumer demand. The plan calls for price supports to aid orderly marketing, soil bank extension, expanded markets at home and abroad, limits on price fixing, and inflation control.
A crowd of about 500 watched 33 riders at a Southeast Iowa Trailriders horse show on the fair grounds Sunday afternoon. Harvie Richardson won the calf roping contest after a morning trail ride. Winners included Roger Finke, Steve Schmidt, Jim Hootman, Mickey Hageman, Nancy Holzworth, Helen Thees, and John Hileman across multiple classes.
At a special assembly Washington High School received a new 50 star American Flag from the local Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Mrs. W. B. Dupuis presented the flag as patriotic chairman. The event preceded the annual Junior High Awards program in the auditorium.
Variable clouds and scattered storms across Iowa tonight and Tuesday with little temperature change. Lows around 54 and highs 73 to 84. Wednesday brings showers and cooler air, followed by near normal temps this week as weekend highs reach the upper 70s and lows in the lower 50s. Precipitation expected at about 0.25 inch midweek and again toward the period's end.
