Services for Professor William Hunter 43 head of industrial arts at Iowa State College will be Thursday. Hunter was found dead in an Ames auto parked in a garage. Coroner Guy Mills McCalisburg ruled death by own action by carbon monoxide.
Reinbeck Ben Runft tells a Ripley story about a Chester White sow that farrowed eight white pigs by noon and that night farrowed eight black pigs. The sow nursed them and started for market. the pigs are sired by two boars, a Chester White and a Berkshire.
Dr H H Ennis, medical director who has led the northwest Iowa district health unit No 1 since last September, is appointed permanent director by state health officials. Dr R M Sorenson, who had a leave of absence to study, will locate elsewhere.
Hugo Sander, 33, died at Sibley hospital from injuries while unloading fertilizer in his farm orchard at Lake Park. Mrs. Sander witnessed the accident from the home window and cannot confirm whether he fell or was pulled down by the machinery.
Dr. L A Stueland a 38 year old veterinarian of Lake Mills drowned near Clear Lake after a rowboat towing another overturned. Knute Meland also of Lake Mills disappeared after the capsizing. R. M. Thomas and J. D. Shoeman both Clear Lake veterinarians attempted to rescue them.
The mother Mrs Viola Holder of Luton joined her two sons and daughter at the family altar praying for William David Boulton and the crew of the disabled submarine Squalus, cast into the Atlantic after a plunge earlier today.
Minburn high school with 42 students enrolled earned the top composite rating in the statewide testing program ahead of Iowa City tests next month. Supt. James Duncan said Minburn also led eleventh grade literature and English correctness among all high schools in every class.
IOWA CITY president George W. Diemer of Central Missouri State Teachers College Warrensburg Mo announced Dr Lonzo Jones assistant dean of men at the University of Iowa Iowa City had been elected vice president of the Missouri school from a pool of 72 candidates.
Washington groups announce Memorial Day schedule with three bands the Municipal Concert and High School units. Parade starts 10:00 from Avenue H E and West Washington, two sections to Woodlawn and Elm Grove cemeteries, then concerts in Central Park.
A Japanese light cruiser halted the British liner Ranpura four miles south of Waglan light, fired two shots across the bow, and sent officers aboard to verify papers before two British destroyers arrived. Passengers say Rear Admiral A. J. L. Murray was among the Ranpura’s passengers. The incident prompts a likely British protest against Japan.
In an Empire Day speech King George urged that force or threat to settle disputes between the United States and the British empire be inconceivable. He said Canada and the United States have long resolved differences without force and vowed the two nations should remain at peace. The address, broadcast to millions, marked a vital international message.
At a Washington County Medical Society meeting yesterday evening the decision to join the Centennial Whisker Club was discussed and Dr H P Masson was unanimously elected to grow a beard to represent the medical profession. The May meeting followed a dinner at 6:30 at the Durses home and featured Dr J P Boyd of Iowa City speaking on Factors in Infant Mortality.
Mrs. C. A. Speer moves this afternoon to Wapello to establish residence at 630 Isett avenue with Mr. Speer. The couple will make their home at the new address.
Graduation exercises for 150 eighth grade graduates from rural Washington county schools will be held at the Methodist church on the evening of June 2. County Superintendent Lester B. Krabill announces 143 from country schools and seven from Holy Trinity parish at Richmond, with diplomas and a program including songs led by Prof. C. A. Fullerton.
London reports the British cabinet agreed to pursue a mutual aid pact with Russia after weeks of negotiations and Prime Minister Chamberlain voiced optimism for a full agreement soon. In Danzig, a note to Poland protested sovereignty claims amid frontier tensions following a shooting incident.
Mrs Clarence Dodds died yesterday evening at 4 45 at Washington county hospital after a five month illness. Funeral services will be at 2 00 Thursday at L A Jones funeral home conducted by Dr Arthur Atack. Burial in Him Grove cemetery. Born Alma Johnson Milan Illinois May 8 1890 she moved to Washington as a girl and lived there since. She married Clarence Dodds March 4 1913 and is survived by the husband and one son Clyde. She was a member of the Methodist church and the Women s Relief Corps.
Daughters of the American Revolution will award medals for history essays in seventh and eighth grades tomorrow afternoon at 1 o clock. Mothers of pupils are invited to attend the presentation. The American Legion citizenship awards will also be presented to one girl and one boy from the junior high school.
Telegram informs Mrs. John Squire of Theodore White's death in Jackson Ohio this morning. White recently visited Washington and stayed with Mrs. White last summer. No funeral time yet. Sudden death suspected despite no recent illness. He leaves his brother J W White and sister Mrs Squire.
Clarence L. Shanafelt of Wapello reports the death of his sister Edith Shanafelt in Chicago after an early week accident. Funeral services will be in Washington at Elm Grove Cemetery with arrival from Chicago and burial at Elm Grove. The Shanafelt family, formerly of Washington, belonged to the local lumber yard era and close kin include Mrs. J. W. Smith of Hobart Indiana.
Washington centennial whisker club adds new members since yesterday’s edition. Names include H. C. Snyder Bill Smart S R Majors Frank Parrish Vic Trosky H J Hays Ted Bailey W W Wade L Sutherland John Wickert Carl Worford Lloyd Fredmund Clayton Hear Chick Long Don Boyer Ed Sorrell Bill Crandall H C L Hotle Claude L Reister Jr Max Goodlander George Baker Charles Crone Clarence Lee Robert West Dr E K E Stutsman Harry Ramseyer Les Muck.
Seven survivors were brought from the Squalus at 240 feet below the surface, reportedly in good condition, by a Falcon diving bell. Navy officials say 32 crew members are safe and 27 are dead. two Iowans are among the dead. Lt. O. T. Naquin is listed among the survivors.
Nearly 100 men join the Whisker Club as the centennial push continues. Twenty five new signups since yesterday’s Journal list. Al Goddard thanks local firms for cooperation. First official meeting set for Central Park at 7 30 this evening. Members urged to attend and call Al Joddard or others to join.
Committees to visit Washington elementary schools to inform children about Memorial Day have been announced. The St James and Lincoln groups will tour on May 29, the Centennial and Wallace crews on May 26, with assignments listed for each school and several named members and ministers.
