A wild pheasant wandered through Hobson jewelry in Emmetsburg stopping shoppers before Frank Lewis, a customer, picked up the bird and released it at the town edge.
The Rev. Bames N. Tompkins, retired Methodist minister on the Sioux City Fort Dodge circuit, who died a week ago, left his estate to his widow Myrta to be used as he would wish if alive. The will directs funds for her support and for memorials aligned with his beliefs. The couple served in Sioux City and Fort Dodge during his long ministry.
Iowa State College extension horticulturalist John B. Wingert urges setting mower height to 1.5 to 2 inches rather than 0.75 inches. He says taller mowing helps grass resist sun and stay healthier in hot, 80 degree conditions.
Wilfred Lin gren of Forest City is among ten junior college graduates awarded National Tuition scholarships at Southern California University. He graduates this year from Waldorf College where he edits the Waldorf Lobbyist newspaper and serves as president of the local Phi Beta Kappa chapter.
Cedar Rapids attorney John M. Powell son of Municipal Judge Thomas B. Powell pleaded a case before his father. The charge involved turning in a false fire alarm. He represented Jerome Kehonek 21 of Livermore a University of Iowa student.
The Washington Centennial Whisker Club seeks female support for a August centennial celebration to boost interest and talk. The text urges wives not to discourage their husbands who commit to growing whiskers for the event and predicts positive impact on the centennial preparations.
Student Behun K and L W Schollman both 22 were arrested with him and each fined 10 dollars with five suspended.

Wayne Wilson argued public education equalizes opportunities and lowers illiteracy, while Mabel Finney highlighted education shaping character through figures like Lincoln and Keller.
The United States submarine Squalus sank in 240 feet of water off Portsmouth New Hampshire. About 60 men feared aboard. Divers and a rescue ship rushed to the scene as officials sought a cause, marking a rare serious U S submarine accident since 1927.
Judge Frank Bechly yesterday and today granted two decrees of divorce at the district court March term. This morning Iva Bales was granted a divorce from Walter Bales, while yesterday Jennie Allen obtained a divorce from Dudley Allen.
A Des Moines incubator plant was destroyed today causing an estimated $20,000 loss. The blaze briefly threatened the Des Moines gas company plant. Philip Worth, manager, said part of the loss is insured.
The Leon Beatty post of the American Legion will present a free motion picture program Thursday night at 7:30 in the Washington high school auditorium. Aimed at community betterment, the screenings cover the history of baseball, boys state views, citizenship training, and highway safety topics.
Radio star Louisiana Lou will headline a program in Central Park at two o clock afternoon. The event, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, features several other WHO station performers and is expected to attract a large crowd.
Queen Mary mother of King George escaped injury when her car overturned in a Wimbledon collision with a motor truck. She was slightly shaken and bruised, but emerged smiling from surgery and was driven home, amid cheers from onlookers.
William S. Cook of Cedar Rapids paid a $25 fine after pleading guilty to reckless driving in justice court. He was arrested Sunday near Crawfordsville by a state highway patrolman. Arrangements at arraignment showed initial reluctance to plead before admitting guilt.
Leslie C. Ross of Winfield faced Justice J. K. Royee on a charge of failing to stop at the scene of an accident. Ross paid a fine as the case concluded.
Concrete was poured today on the road at the Elm Grove cemetery entrance to link with the newly paved cemetery road from South Iowa avenue. If no rain halts progress, the pavement on the road and in the cemetery should be finished by tonight and ready for Decoration Day, save for some flames lingering.

Free for all Wellman women, the series offers practical health information for wives and mothers with weekly Thursday sessions.
A local court docket records a side-swiping collision east of town on Saturday night. The defendant faced a fine and costs totaling six dollars.

The Republic Steel company filed a 7.5 million dollar damage suit in federal court accusing the Congress of Industrial Organization and its leaders of orchestrating the 1937 little steel strike. It seeks tripled damages under the Clayton act for alleged unlawful acts including violence and property destruction affecting Ohio plants in Cleveland and other cities, naming nearly 700 individuals.
The official temperature at noon reached 94 degrees signaling the height of summer heat. Forecasters expect continued high temperatures as the day progresses with sunny conditions across the region.

M B Ridlen started work Saturday at the LG A grocery store on the south side of the square after moving from Mt Pleasant last Thursday. The Ridlens live in Lemmon apartments and attend the Methodist church. Mrs Ridlen is a Pi Beta Phi from Simpson College Ina Dianola. Mr Ridlen belongs to the I O O F and pursues painting as a hobby after a life of work as a food salesman.
