Two dozen thousand troops arrive in New York City from Europe amid a large-scale deployment. The arrival underscores ongoing Allied movement during the war and signals continued support for operations in Europe.
Paris May 24 Count von BrockdorffRantzaus protest against harsh peace terms warns the treaty will sentence millions of Germans to death. He argues Germany will lose crops minerals coal and colonies and cannot import enough raw materials after surrender of merchant fleet. Clemenceau calls the claim rash and says Britain will recover with reduced armaments and continued imports.
Versailles reports say the economic experts deem Austria able to pay indemnity and forfeit shipping as with the German fleet. The treaty aims to base demands on justice and right while excluding modifications. Count Brockdorff Rantzau and German delegates depart for Spa but progress continues with other negotiators.

In Wil helmplatz government socialists faced a massive Independent socialist parade that swept them aside as 500000 marchers filled downtown Berlin. Workmen soldiers and many bourgeois joined, waving banners urging swift peace terms while red flags filled the night as protesters demanded action.
Ten bodies have been recovered from the Douglas company starch works ruins in Cedar Rapids Iowa. Seven workers are missing and presumed buried. Identified dead include Jay Kilemish Stingley Ed Trentissa Mike Triatonts Jake The missing are Josef Kosina Sr Joseph Kosina Jr Joseph Vaverka Samuel Getz Charles Triche Harvey Eckert Charles John. Fourteen are hospitalized with many more injured at home or in hospital. total injuries uncertain for days.
The cable ship Faraday reports sighting the red light of an airplane early Monday at 50 degrees 28 minutes north and 50 degrees west, roughly halfway between England and Newfoundland, aligned with Harry Hawker’s attempted flight from the American continent to Ireland.
Senate measures push wartime and constitutional prohibition with a prohibition commissioner and state assistance. The bills define liquor broadly and ban airplane transport, advertising, and public drinking, with penalties and a $3,000,000 enforcement appropriation for 1920. Repeal proposals for wines and beer also appear in the same session.
Washington reports the senate approved without debate the deficiency appropriation bill carrying 845000000 for war risk allotments to families of soldiers and sailors and dependents of civil war veterans. The measure now goes to the president.
Washington May 24 The war cost the United States 21 294 000 000 up to April 30 1919 according to an estimate from the War Department statistics branch. Two thirds or about 14 000 000 000 was expenditures incurred by the war department.
Washington May 24 Senator Sherman Rep of Minnesota denounces the League of Nations as a revolutionary oligarchy threatening sovereignty. He labels the covenant a trap intertwined with the peace treaty and urges separate consideration to allow a sober verdict. He accuses President Wilson of breaking faith with China Poland and Italy and yielding to Britain.
Special to Evening Journal reports a fire that destroyed the big steamer Virginia with ten to fifteen fatalities. The article also notes arrivals in New York including the Santa Teresa with fourteen hundred wounded from Europe and troops aboard the America and Agamemnon, highlighting the 122nd 124th and 840th Field Artillery units.
In Baltimore on May 24 a fire aboard the steamship Virginia claimed ten to fifteen lives. The vessel carried 160 passengers and was valued at $700,000 with several ships assisting in rescue efforts.
London dispatch reports great fires and explosions in Petrograd as Bolsheviki, pressed by the Estonian advance, are believed to be destroying munitions. The populace has risen against the Bolsheviki amid the turmoil.

Representative Kahn of California, head of the house military committee, proposes demanding the immediate withdrawal of the entire American army from Europe. He returns to Washington to organize the committee and outlines recommendations for a peacetime army of 100,000 and universal military training.
A report to Senator Chamberlain accuses officers of the 35th division Kansas and Missouri troops of responsibility for heavy Argonne losses. The document was submitted to the Senate Military Affairs Committee.
Trank A. Shea aged 40 and Duncan Macttiveay aged 45, brokers, were killed when Shea's car hit a curb and crashed into a trolley pole in New York on May 24.
