A massive explosion at the Douglas Starch Works in Cedar Rapids Iowa on May 23 kills twenty and wounds about a hundred. The blast shatters windows citywide and starts a fire complicating rescue as investigators explore possible boom causes.
North Russian front reports a successful turning movement by Allied forces on May 20 north of Medvyejagora near Lambushki. Bolshevik troops retreated southward after heavy casualties, with prisoners taken. Towns Lambushki Ostreche and Kolodarl were captured in the operation.
In New York on May 23 transports Leviathan Imperator and cruiser Charleston entered port with 5,466 Prairie division troops aboard. The arrival followed several fogbound hours and included two famed former units of the German army.
The Illinois National Guard regiments nicknamed the Fighting Seventh and the old Third led a mass arrival as the transport Manchuria along with Mexican Yale Ohioan and the cruiser Seattle entered the harbor. In eight hours 27 708 troops arrived, breaking all prior handling records.
Augusto B. Leguia running as an independent candidate reports winning Peru’s presidency by a large margin. He cites province telegrams totaling about 100000 votes against 20000 for rival Antero Aspillage and promises to invite foreign capital for Peru’s resource development.
Calgary unions vote on a general strike in sympathy with Winnipeg workers as talks continue. Winnipeg reports aggressive business resumption after a weeklong strike, with officials promising to stamp out Bolshevik elements. Ottawa ministers meet strike leaders as stores resume deliveries and no disorder is reported.
Esthonians pushing toward Petrograd near Gatschina captured the Vruga railway station and took 700 prisoners, according to an Ethonian official statement. Gratsching lies about 35 miles south of Petrograd.
Frank Lawbone found guilty of murder in the shooting of Max Nottingham on April 4. He pleaded insanity and will be executed by hanging in Carmi, with no motive developed for the crime.
London dispatch reports renewed German nationalist sentiment after peaceful terms, with Upper Silesia prepared to resist partition. About 1.5 million signed pledges to cede mining and foundry assets only for blood price, while 130,000 Prussian troops await further action. Fifteen thousand citizens of Winnipeg were sworn in as volunteer guards to prevent a Bolshevik backed Soviet government. They drill under returned soldiers with shifts on duty at bar racks. Mount Clemens Michigan May 23 Henry Ford announced he would hire 1000 American doughboys maimed or crippled in World War I within 24 hours and extend to as many as 9000 more as soon as possible. He made the remark during an interview while his counsel argued a libel suit against the Chicago Tribune at the Macomb courthouse. In Kiev Ukraine on the front Poles have begun attacks on the whole front against the Ukrainians.
Paris and Coblenz dispatches report the Fourth and Fifth divisions’ homeward move suspended as a precaution. Generals Liggett and Hines were recalled to Coblenz, with 900 motor trucks moved toward the Rhine bridgehead to prepare for an advance if needed. Civilians complain of disturbances as US troops station near the Rhine.

Hungarian red army reportedly to burn Budapest and slay hostages if attacks on Roumania fail. Lenine allegedly declares peace impossible and predicts a world revolution, urging Bela Kun to persist as bolshevism nears relief for Hungary. Professor Ladislas Rudas cites Lenine.
Reported explosion casualties were located today with initial assessments indicating injuries but survivors are expected to recover. Authorities are investigating cause and identifying the responsible parties as hospitals treat victims.
Cedar Rapids Iowa May 28 special to Evening Journal reports a German delegation condemns a proposed treaty phrase as a death warrant. Meanwhile the Douglass Starch Works disaster toll rises with nine known dead, two more bodies found, two unidentified men dying in hospital, fourteen wounded not expected to recover, and rescue teams continuing to search the wreckage.
Count von Brockdorff Rantzau, head of the German Peace delegation, warned that signers of the Peace Treaty would sign the death warrant for millions of Germans. He spoke in a formal communication to the Allies objecting to the treaty and its economic terms.
Reports from Vienne on May 23 describe executions in Budapest by Hungarian communists. Victims include rail manager Herr Holan Bishop Balthaser Colonel Dormany and several girls accused of making tricolor rosettes. Bodies have been found along the Danube islands.
On May 23, 37 750 American troops were shipped home from France in a single 24hour period. The service of supply reports the largest embarkation total in history for a 24hour span. Officials expect May totals to exceed 10,000 as speed remains high.
The Greater Berlin Soldiers Workers’ Congress adopted a resolution urging that the peace treaty be signed and that the demands of the proletariat of the allied nations be reflected in the postwar settlement.
