The American Legion Auxiliary plans a three day poppy sale this week. All proceeds fund aid for disabled veterans and their families and most funds stay in local communities for relief work. Donations of any amount are welcome to honor war dead and assist the living.
Parents invited to sessions this week as eighth graders study drug abuse with periods scheduled. Sheriff’s department will screen a film and discuss drugs in the community during class times 8:44 to 9:29 a.m., 10:22 to 11:07 a.m., 12:00 to 12:46 p.m., 1:15 to 2:00 p.m., and 2:53 to 3:38 p.m.
Rep. Tom Harkin announced federal aid for Shenandoah Page County water system improvements totaling nearly 5 million dollars. The package includes about 1 million in grants and 4 million in long term, low interest loans from the Farmers Home Administration.
Gary Kinyon of Greenfield Iowa, 33, died at Boone County Glass Co when 2,100 pounds of plate glass fell on him while unloading a truck. He held seven sheets weighing 300 pounds each against his truck. they slipped and toppled onto him, and the medical examiner said he bled to death from a throat wound.
Stan Kenton 65 a famed big band leader collapsed at a Reading motel while preparing for a concert. He was moved from Community General Hospital to Reading Hospital and Medical Center to undergo brain scans and tests for a possible cerebral thrombosis.
The Iowa House approved a 2.3 million pay package raising lawmakers salaries from 8000 to 12000 annually and boosting top officials and judges. The plan, tied to a compensation commission, moves to Gov. Ray with July 1 effective dates and IPERS retirement coverage for legislators.
The Supreme Court refused to hear John Ehrlichman H R Haldeman and John Mitchell in the 1975 Watergate coverup trial. The court gave no reason and noted Justice Rehnquist did not participate amid reports of justices deliberations. Ehrlichman has begun serving a 30 month to eight year sentence. Haldeman and Mitchell remain free on bail while appeals continue.
Washington High School Future Farmers of America held its fifth annual awards and appreciation banquet on Saturday night. National FFA secretary Mike Jackson spoke as awards honored students and supporters, with scholarships, DeKalb and Star awards, and multiple degree recognitions along with officer installation.
The Farm Progress Show will use more than 1000 acres near Washington for field demonstrations from September 27 to 29. Maurice Crawford and son Dennis prepared the Owens farm plots while Scott McKinnie coordinates 700 corn, soybean, sorghum and alfalfa varieties. Over 300 exhibitors will offer tillage, fertility, chemical and harvesting demos, with free admission and parking as Washington county residents plan to host a large crowd.
Arthur Bundy drove an Overland truck all day using oxygen derived from air for power and light. The system relies on inexpensive chemicals that release energy without oil or gas, claiming a five cent running cost and safety for use by children. The generator sits beside the engine with a throttle controlled air intake to vary speed.
A ten year old feature describes inventor Bundy and partners pursuing an air powered engine. The device uses rotary cells to force air, weighs under 80 pounds, lacks spark plugs or carburetor, and aims for one horsepower per pound. Demonstrations show heating with chemicals replacing coal and future use in cooking and automobiles.
Washington High School seniors received class awards for classroom work and service at Senior Class Day. Deb Vanderlinden and Don Woodruff presented Hi-Life and individual honors. officers include Bill Whittenberg and Marty Schooley.
