Police reported a break-in at the Handy Pantry in Washington this morning. Thieves stole one 12-pack of beer and five more were found in the alley behind the building. A second attempted entry at Triple F Feeds failed in recent days.
Area artists must deliver artwork by Friday May 24 for the Washington Public Library annual art show opening May 28 and running through June 3. Memorial services for Ainsworth will be held May 27 at Ainsworth Cemetery, with band, speaker, and Legion Auxiliary activities. In Sioux City, sheriff and police investigate multiple sniping incidents with no injuries reported. In Davenport Quad Cities, 21 people were arrested in a six month drug traffic investigation involving multiple agencies. more arrests expected.
Gary McCall, 30, piloting a Piper Pawnee spray plane owned by G and G Spraying Service of Atlantic, survived after an emergency landing on the lawn of Max Karns residence near here. The aircraft struck power lines after takeoff, caught fire, and was destroyed. McCall suffered only minor cuts.
Patricia Hearst, once a kidnapping victim, faces formal charges of kidnaping in Los Angeles. The complaint accuses her of becoming a gun wielding member of the Symbionese Liberation Army alongside William and Emily Harris, who remain at large after a 12 hour abduction of a high school youth.
Iowa Zone 13 forecast calls for clear skies and cooler conditions tonight with lows around the mid 50s and light variable winds. Thursday brings sunny skies and little temperature change with daytime highs in the mid 70s.
Kissinger held hours of talks with Prime Minister Golda Meir in Jerusalem then flew to Damascus to press a full disengagement accord with Syria. He aims for thinning out forces, a buffer zone, UN role, and prisoner exchange while hinting he may return home without a pact.
Naomi Fetterman of Treynor Iowa and formerly of Washington will join an eight week American Field Service program in Rhein Germany starting mid June. Sponsored by the Washington AFS chapter she will live with the Willie Manzke family at Rhein Hasemstrabe 17. She is the daughter of Rev. and Mrs Einar Fetterman and attended Washington High School before moving to Treynor in January.
United Press Internatione reports severe weather across northeast and north central Iowa. Winds up to 70 mph toppled trees damaged a mobile home in Hampton, delayed school dismissal, and prompted rainfall totals with Osage at 1.78 inches. A Menlo Junior High student was cut by flying glass. Tornado sightings occurred near Alden but caused no damage.
The Washington County Fair will skip a formal carnival for the first time, as Fair Association seeks replacement attractions. Entertainment chairman John Gamon says a makeshift setup with booths and rides is possible, while public help is invited and a meeting is set for Thursday to discuss options.
