McGovern backs antibusing bill linked to education funds
Senator George S. McGovern will support a compromise antibusing bill only because it is attached to an $18.5 billion education authorization. He said he would vote for the measure though he questions its moratorium on busing and cited the need to protect education funding. Caesar Chavez endorsed the senator as he campaigns in Oregon before the May 23 primary. Humphrey plans a 16 day California swing ahead of the June 6 primary and both candidates announce national TV debates for May 28 and June 4. Also noted are Brown Jr. certifying Wallace as a write in candidate in California amid his recovery from a gunshot wound. Shirley Chisholm, while in Los Angeles, commented on crowd engagement after the shooting.
