Four drown in Iowa over warm weekend
Four people died in Iowa during the first summerlike weekend. An Ottumwa man, Lloyd Horner, 45, was not recovered after a Des Moines River accident near Ottumwa and a search was set to resume. Other drownings occurred in the Cedar River near Waterloo and in two farm ponds in Cantril and Milton areas, with multiple rescues and ongoing drag operations.

Wayland resident CW4 William H. Thoma retires after 35 years in Army Reserve and active duty. His career began in 1932 with the Iowa National Guard, included World War II service in the China Burma India Theater, and concluded with a reserve drill at the local unit where he was allowed to inspect in ranks. He will continue as a civilian senior administrative supply technician under Capt. Jimmy D. Litwiller.

The 1972 commencement begins at 8 p.m. Tuesday with 174 seniors in attendance. Three graduates will give keynote addresses, introduced by Supt. E K Schlapkohl. Principal Burge Hammond will present diplomas, and James Lloyd will award them. The event features brass and concert choirs, an invocation by Rev Tho Giuntoli, a benediction by Rev Tom Pace, and organist Ann Krogmeier performing.
