Russell Seeks North Carolina Delegates In Democratic Contest

Senator Richard B. Russell of Georgia counts on North Carolina's bloc to boost his Democratic convention tally. North Carolina aims to provide about 40 percent of the state’s delegates, with 22 votes, as Taft and Eisenhower vie for GOP delegates in final preconvention contests. Eisenhower plans to hand European defense duties to Ridgway on May 30 and return to Washington by June 1.

Ridgway Urges Congress On Korean Peace Talks Role

General Matthew Ridgway told a joint session of Congress that stalemated Korean peace talks stem from Communist leaders' blind hatred and falsehoods. He warned of possible renewed large scale warfare and praised U.N. truce negotiators and Allied forces under Gen. Van Fleet. He criticized Communist claims of germ warfare and condemned May Day protests in Japan as designed to strike at America and its principles.

Washington City Council Reviews Streets and Remodeling Plans

City council discussed state highway repairs to detour streets used during Highway 42 work including West Madison and West Monroe streets and Avenue C. A sidewalk on North Second Avenue in the 90 block was proposed but delayed. Remodeling at City Hall to expand the Clerk's office and provide a mayor's court room was planned along with re decoration. shrubs and trees planting rules for terraces were noted.

Washington Woman Dies After Three Car Crash

Mrs. Jacob DeKoning, 64, of Washington, died at Washington County Hospital after a three car collision on highway 92 near West Chester. Kev DeKoning, gravely injured, and Phillip Alles McCreedy, 16, were hospitalized with injuries. Mrs. Mayer and her two daughters were treated and released. Funeral arrangements are pending.
