Respiratory Failure Claims Artificial Heart Patient in Houston

Walter L. McCans, 61, a Navy veteran from Woodinville, Washington, died at Methodist Hospital in Houston after receiving an artificial heart last Tuesday. He developed pulmonary insufficiency and underwent further surgery amid complications. He was the third patient to receive the device from Dr. Michael DeBakey. the first two also died.

Wave of violence erupts in Watts after inquest and burglary shot

In racially tense south central Los Angeles a Thursday night wave of shooting rock throwing and beating erupted in Watts triggered by an inquest into a police shooting and a burglary suspect being wounded. Up to 150 youths attacked cars bricks were hurled at storefronts a shop owner fired at a vehicle and a KNXT mobile unit was hit. Police wearing black beret headgear reported 28 arrests in the Negro area since 5 p.m. Thursday.

Summer reading program begins at Washington library

The Children's Summer Reading Program opens June 20 and runs through July 18 at the Washington Public Library. Directed by Mrs. Tom Brown, it invites kindergarten through fifth grade children to attend Monday to Friday 9:00 to 10:30 for storytelling films songs and book talks. Each child keeps a personal reading record with books supplied by the library. certificates awarded for meeting a minimum books read and good attendance. last year 375 youngsters participated.
