Martin Wood Jr a cashier at First State Bank of What Cheer was found dead in Goode State Park after federal auditors flagged a $7000 bank shortage. Bank president Baylor said the shortage covered by FDIC insurance and the death was ruled a death by own action. Wood 27 left the bank before examiners counted vault cash and was a town leader and father of four. Authorities were continuing to investigate the missing funds as the bank remained open.

N E Treat, social security district manager in Burlington Iowa, announced Washington County paid $2,497,515 in benefits in 1965 up from the prior year by 240,675 and 50 recipients. The rise reflects 1965 amendments adding a 7 percent retroactive increase, Medicare linkage, and new qualifies for widows students divorced workers and disabled workers. The county counted 1,775 retired workers and families, 52 disabled workers and families, and 822 wives and children. Average monthly benefit was $84.00. The changes broadened protection against retirement disability or death and Medicare costs.

McMahill Enters Race for State Auditor Nomination
Rex McMahill former superintendent of state buildings and grounds and former state car dispatcher announced his bid as the Republican candidate for state auditor. The 43 year old native of Bedford urged uniform procedures to save money and called for active advisory participation with the governor and legislature. He was appointed car dispatcher in 1961 by Gov Norman Erbe and later became buildings and grounds superintendent until last year.

Artificial heart called success for Walter McCans
A 63 year old Navy retiree, Walter L McCans of Woodinville Washington, recovered enough after 24 hours on the DeBakey left ventricular bypass device to move from a special to a regular intensive care unit. Surgeons removed the artificial heart after healing began, though lung bleeding was only partly corrected. The device rested the heart to allow healing while pumping most blood.

In Shade Gap Pennsylvania FBI agent was killed and Peggy Ann Brodnick held seven days by gunman William Hollenbaugh known as Bicycle Pete. Hollenbaugh, 44, was shot dead by a 15 year old on his farm after a long manhunt. Peggy Ann was freed in excellent condition though bruised.
