Iowa Senate approves tax swap replacing moneys to income tax
The Iowa Senate voted 51 to 2 to repeal five mills of the six mill moneys and credits tax, replacing the lost revenue with a 1 percent state income tax on all taxable income above $9,000. One mill would stay to fund Korean War Bonus Bonds, with other revenue sent to counties to offset losses. A substitute to fund the gap via a surtax on interest and dividends failed 38 to 17.

Cairo crash ends first China Middle East air link
A Pakistan Airlines Boeing 720B crashed near Cairo during an inaugural Karachi to Cairo leg, killing 121 people and injuring six survivors. Among the dead were Pakistani, Chinese and possibly American travelers, with a Chinese diplomatic pouch and anti American propaganda found at the wreckage. The disaster ranks as the third worst single plane crash, following Paris 1962 and Tokyo 1953 incidents.

House Continues Debate on School Standards
Des Moines Iowa House debated a measure setting minimum school standards for town schools after handling 25 amendments. An amendment to apply standards to private and parochial schools was defeated 87 to 2. The bill would require the state superintendent to set rules for all public and private schools and staff, with power to remove schools after 120 days for noncompliance.
