DES MOINES UPI The chief sponsor Sen Howard Reppert says he has 31 votes in the Iowa Senate to approve a pari mutuel betting bill allowing wagering on horse and dog races at private tracks and fairgrounds. Debate opened in an evening session with 54 amendments filed. only one was approved. An amendment banning legislators and spouses from financial interest in a race track passed 36-22, while an Hansen rider to limit betting at fairgrounds when fairs are not in session was defeated. Reppert projected about 4 million dollars in first-year tax revenue and three new industries for Iowa. Hansen argued for a staged approach beginning at fairgrounds. Benda said Hansen's amendment could speed final passage.
