H C Burke of Burlington was convicted in District court of stealing a negotiable note valued at 310 and a mortgage from A J Anderson, a music dealer. Jury returned a guilty verdict at 2 30 PM with a mercy recommendation. Maximum penalty five years.
John Holler Jr. has been indicted by the grand jury and is jailed awaiting trial on a charge of attempting to poison Ed Brazelton's horse. Bogey tracks led from Brazelton's home to Holler's workplace where paris green was found on his vehicle and harness. Holler says the toxin was used in paint and transferred by mistake. prosecutors say the plan aimed to swap horses to obtain money to marry a local girl.
Willie Waites a colored lad in the county jail escaped from solitary confinement about 530 last evening and remains at large. He had been fed in the upstairs room and the door was shut but not locked before the other prisoners were served. Waites has a history of petty theft and burglary indictments, with reforms hoped for by authorities.
Fond du Lac Wis May 20 General Bragg secures adjournment of a citizen suit against the Fond du Lac Street Railway and Light Co and Attorney General Hicks postponing the argument a week The petition claims the April 8 1898 franchise ordinance was altered and taken from the clerk by the grantee’s attorney before Mayor signatures The company expects to have over half the line completed by Madison court date.
Cora Palmer a Wilmington teen reported missing for two weeks has been found in Joliet working for Mrs. A. S. Myers. She claims to be 18, married three years, and says she left home due to cruelty, walking from Wilmington to Joliet in rain a week ago. She has refused to return home.
Reports from St Joseph and Portage areas describe hundreds of peach trees dying at the roots due to February's severe cold. Trees bloomed then sap froze, green fruit dried and dropped. In Portage a jury found John Edward Scherbarth guilty of murder in the second degree, leaving seven children homeless.
Prizes for top art displays by Illinois high school pupils were awarded at the state scholastic conference at the University of Illinois. Winners include Canton, with Champlain and Englewood also earning prizes. LaSalle among others.

Havana reports Cuban arms dispute widens with Porter Gomez agreement under review by Brooke and Secretary of War.
In Arma Washington on May 20 Secretary Alger angrily rejects claims that the president countermanded General Brooke’s disarmament order for Cuban troops. He explains the plan to surrender arms aimed to restore soldiers to civilian work and prevent possible brigandage.
Minneapolis May 20 Sunday observance dominated the Presbyterian assembly agenda. The special committee on Sunday observance reported eight resolutions adopted with minor changes, condemning Sunday street cars trains rail excursions and any nonconformity to the Fourth commandment. A report on Western Catholic chapel permission at West Point sparked indigent reaction. The foreign missions report called the day of missions dawning.
Fort Wayne residents push for a new link between the Detroit line and the Toledo branch to compensate for the possible voiding of the Eel River lease. A mass meeting will raise funds to connect Butler to New Haven, a twenty mile span that would make Fort Wayne the division point between Detroit and St Louis if completed.
A Chicago financier J S Goodwin and Sioux City banker Abel Anderson are named in a syndicate reportedly forming to buy and consolidate the Sioux City stock yards. The Credits Commutation company controls Live Stock National bank Pacific Short Line bridge and large real estate holdings, with subsidiaries capitalized at 7.5 million dollars and backing around 40 to 60 million. Denials say no negotiations or transfers have taken tangible form yet.
Workers step back from agreements with Conners and demand abrogation of the Lake Carriers contract. They repudiate Bishop Quigley urging a return to terms and vow to let the dispute over deck and elevator labor drag on as crews join the strike effort.
Reports from Pana Illinois say coal operators and the United Mine Workers reached a complete settlement after a meeting with the state board of arbitration. The agreement recognizes the union and orders that all black workers leave the city with only union men employed. National UMW leaders confirmed the arrangement as satisfactory to both sides.
