Used car tax bill stalls in Iowa House committee

In Des Moines the House Ways and Means Committee stalled a Senate approved bill that would tax all used car transactions to fund the general state treasury. The panel split 15 to 17, with Republicans mostly voting yes and Democrats opposing, citing burden on poorer buyers. The measure aims to raise about 13 million dollars yearly by diverting sales tax from road maintenance. dealers would add 3.8 million and casual sales about 9 million. The panel also rejected a plan to let counties levy a 1 mill property tax for ambulance services, amid concerns about higher taxes and private providers.
