The 1971 YMCA World Service carnival in the Washington Y building features booths for car smashing, fortune telling, fishing pond, shuffle board, pool, tram poline, weight guessing, putting, and more. A movie, water show, and dance cap the evening with a clothes sale by YWCA friends, proceeds toward the local YMCA quota of $1,300.

Guest speaker Dan Grimm of Des Moines, a former NFL player, praised the Washington community and discussed youth issues, crime, and drug abuse. Rex Lee filled a one year term to replace L A Holland. three year terms went to Tom Waters, John Walker, Phil Ahrens, George Van Houten, and new member Gift Morrison. retiring directors included Paul Gebhardt Rev Richard Peterson and Kelly Schlapkoh. A public address system funded by memorial gifts to Robert Choate and William Boshart was announced, with plaques to honor donors.

Operation Green Thumb Starts Hospital Landscaping Project
Fortnightly and Washington Jaycees teamed to plant trees and shrubs on the grounds of Washington County Hospital as part of Operation Green Thumb. The Fortnightly committee bought 24 evergreens and flowers funded by community contributions totaling 286 dollars, with 100 dollars from the Garden Department. Memorial trees were planted for Mrs. B. E. Stutsman and others, and the project will expand with more landscaping as funds allow.

Senate Rejects Bid For Fewer Troops In Europe
In a decisive vote the Senate rejected a proposal to force withdrawal of 150000 American troops from Europe over three years. The plan, backed by Mansfield to curb the Nixon administration, failed after Sen. Nelson's compromise halved the U S garrison in Europe by year end.
