Khrushchev, who warned U S troops will be driven from Thailand, planned to address a major Communist party rally in Sofia Bulgaria tonight. He mocked Kennedy and Laos policy calling the Thai troop decision stupid and said blood would be shed in Southeast Asia while noting Korea proves war is easy to start but hard to stop.
UPI reports five major levee improvement projects on the Mississippi between Muscatine and Burlington Iowa are planned by the Army Corps of Engineers. Existing flood work continues in Muscatine, with new levees raising protection for tens of thousands of acres and costs ranging from 1.57 to 8.3 million dollars. Completion dates span 1963 to 1966 alongside creek wall repairs and river recreation development near Montpelier and Muscatine.
The Ashington Chamber of Commerce Retail Trade Committee outlined the last six months of the year. Final plans for Ridiculous Day on June 7 were discussed. Eldon Brake chairs the committee.
L. J. Kehoe of Washington was elected president at the Sixth Judicial Bar Association annual meeting in Newton. He had served as vice president last year as the district comprising Washington Keokuk Poweshiek Mahaska and Jasper counties selects leadership. John Baldrige and A. E. Baldrige were honored and next year’s meeting will be in Washington.
The Southeast Iowa Walther League zone rally will be at Trinity Lutheran Church Washington on Sunday May 20. Registration opens at 2 15 p m. Rev Alfred A Bertke of Trinity will lead devotions and the Ladies Aid will serve supper before the rally ends at 7 45 p m.
UPI reports Teamsters President James R. Hoffa faces two court appearances after a Nashville grand jury indicted him and the late Owen Brennan for receiving 1,008,057 dollars from Commercial Carriers Inc. over 1949 to 1958 in violation of Taft Hartley law. Brennan died in Detroit at 57. Hoffa pleaded innocent in Washington on charges of beating a subordinate.
In Algiers OAS commandos fought with a mobile gendarme patrol after shelling the former governor’s residence. An Oran OAS attack failed as a booby trapped fuel truck crashed. No casualties were reported in Algiers. overall toll rose to 4 78 dead and 8 751 injured.
Dutch forces sealed off and closed in on about 200 Indonesian paratroopers on the Onin peninsula near Fak Fak. Earlier, battle near Fak Fak left Indonesian paratroopers fleeing, leaving equipment behind. Casualties unknown and military security cited for lack of details.
A sixth grade pupil, David Rathbun, 11, drowned after toppling into a creek during a Waterville class picnic. His body was recovered quickly. officials from the Alla makee county sheriff and medical examiner investigated the accidental death.
Fire of undetermined origin Friday night destroyed the Rock Island freight depot and loading docks in Newton. The 300 foot long wood structures and contents were a total loss. Two bank cars on a siding nearby were also destroyed. No injuries were reported.
Senator Len Yarborough disclosed that prominent Texans urged Billie Sol Estes to run for Texas governor, likening him to Billy Graham. He declined, noting Estes’ legal troubles and questions about feasibility, while recounting donations and a loan of an airplane tied to Estes’ past campaigns.
Gen. Paul D. Harkins surveyed U S Marine encampments near the Laotian border while 7th Fleet ships off Bangkok unloaded arms and equipment. Lt. Gen. James L. Richardson led newly landed forces as preparations for 1000 more American troops in Thailand progressed amid SEATO discussions.
Iowa Development Commission director Edgar B. Storey submitted a resignation Friday in a sealed envelope. Chair L P Boudreaux said he would not present it at the meeting and will open the letter at the next session. Assistant director Bernard Nowack confirmed the action.
Fire gutted an Evansdale home Friday destroying all belongings of the Darrell Stephens family of five. Mrs Stevens and one child were home but escaped injury while friends collected clothing and personal effects for the family.
Three men died as violent thunderstorms hit Iowa with hail and high winds. Charles Phillips and Edward Drees were struck while driving tractors near Iowa City and Manning. Herman Greiser died walking along a road near Tiffin. Tornadoes were unconfirmed in several areas.
A strong earthquake shook Mexico City causing tall buildings to sway and cracks to open in walls and sidewalks. The shocks followed a similar tremor eight days earlier, sparking panic as hundreds fled hotels and passengers fled a railway station as windows broke.
President Kennedy praised labor’s public welfare efforts and warned of a dire need for more housing for middle income urban families. He spoke at a 2,800 unit cooperative project by ILGWU in lower Manhattan and at a Madison Square Garden event in his honor.
Gerald Ridley of Washington joined the Hole-in-One Club Friday evening at Washington Country Club. His feat came with an assist from Ed Sorrell as Ridley hit from No. 8 tee while a nearby foursome had just finished. The ball caromed off Ed’s heel into the cup, marking the Twilite League’s first hole-in-one in three years.
Partly cloudy and continued warm conditions in Iowa through tonight and Sunday. Lows range 30 to 50 northwest to 70 southeast with Sunday highs generally in the mid 80s. Monday outlook calls for partly cloudy skies and little temperature change.
