Page County Sheriff Ed Hipsley conducts a search after 16000 cigars fell from a wholesale truck between Shenandoah and Clarinda. Five passing motorists are suspected of taking cartons on the highway. Twenty one cartons have been found.
Iowa Governor Robert D. Blue said he may relocate his family to Camp Dodge for the summer. He must vacate his rented home on Waterbury Road by June 5 and has an oral lease on another house at Sereenwood Drive with uncertain possession timing. He plans to occupy Camp Dodge properties formerly used by Brig. Gen. Grahl and Col. Lancaster as the federal takeover ends.
KORT DODGE The mystery of a series of explosions heard in Fort Dodge was solved Friday with the arrest of five youths. Police said they admitted stealing two cases of dynamite from the National Gypsum Co. and setting off the explosives a few sticks at a time. About 306 of the 200 sticks had exploded. the youths are held for juvenile court hearings.
WATERLOO the state encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic and its auxiliary organizations scheduled here June 7 has been canceled per government travel restriction requests. An abbreviated meeting of officers will be held in Des Moines on the same dates, Miss Amy Noll, state secretary, Des Moines said.
William R. Brandon 52, vice-president and secretary of Central Broadcasting Co. and Palmer School of Chiropractic comptroller, died Friday at the Y M C A after years of illness and recent heart attacks. Born November 23 in Hampton, he joined WHO in 1921. He served as Rotary district governor and Kaaba Shrine potentate.
Knoxville district court will hear the murder case of Marion Powell a 59 year old Des Moines painter. Judge Warl Vincent of Guthrie Center will preside Powell faces two indictments for the April 28 shooting death of Mike Slykhuis 393 Knoxville farmer. Powell is to be tried first for Mike Slykhuis’s fatal shooting.
William Elliott of Laredo Missouri is hospitalized with a fractured pelvis after an accident while working on a Milwaukee railroad bridge gang. He is listed in serious condition at the county hospital.
Honeymead Products sells its Cedar Rapids plant to Cargill and shifts its eastern Iowa Missouri Illinois demand to a new Washington plant. Hugo Lenseh will run the Washington facility with R. M. Anderson as assistant manager and L. J. Langhurst as technical superintendent. The move includes 200000 bushels soybean storage and new products like Honeymead Brewer's flakes and soy bean lecithin. Executive office remains in Cedar Rapids at Merchant's National Bank building.
London May 19 radio said Japan was annoyed by persistent reports that it had made peace offers. The broadcast cited a source of annoyance to an unnamed reliable Japanese authority and described the reports as inaccurate.
A worker east of Haskins was injured when a heavy piling slipped and fell. He suffered a fractured pelvis and head lacerations. The incident prompted emergency response and medical evaluation.
Supt M M Schell announced Elizabeth Van Heukelom of Pella will join Washington high school as mathematics instructor next year. She is a Central College graduate with four years teaching, two of them at Aldila High School. The district filled math with substitutes Mrs Homer Smothers and Edna Klein this past year.

At least two people are dead and two missing after a nitroglycerin explosion in a rocket powder plant at Sunflower ordnance works near De Soto Kansas. The blast was confined to a single building and damage is estimated at 40 000 dollars.
Kapitan Leutnant Fritz Steinhoff commander of the German submarine US73 surrendered to the U S Navy. he slashed his wrist with a jagged lens fragment in his Charles Street jail cell and died at Massachusetts General Hospital after transfer. Steinhoff, once skipper of US73, was among four captured Nazi submariners slated for transfer to a POW camp.
The Office of Price Administration schedules eight Iowa meetings on the new livestock and meat distribution order. Ottumwa will host a May 21 gathering at 7 30 p m with Des Moines district office staff explaining the order and its aims to even out this year s reduced meat supply. Slaughters and processors are invited to attend to learn how the order works.
Legion Post commander Jay Brewer of Leon Beatty asks members to assemble outside St.Paul’s Evangelical and Reformed church at 2 15 Sunday afternoon. The memorial will be held for Private Everett Snider at the church at 2 80.
Paris dispatch reports Lt General Leonard T. Gerow's 15th U S army now occupies about 14 000 square miles of Germany including the Saar basin Rhine Valley and western Ruhr. The area is roughly eight times larger than postwar American holdings in 1919 and may not be permanent. The Rhine province is largely included except for a small segment near Wessel and Geldorn.

Premier Stalin stated Russia would not negotiate with 16 arrested Polish leaders in Warsaw as London sources said the move widened the rift with the western allies on the Polish issue. He called for solution and reconstruction of the Polish government in line with the Crimean decision.

The Nazi submarine U-234 surrendered at Portstown New Hampshire on May 19 with 57 officers and crew aboard and three Luftwaffe officers. A mysterious German civilian who tried to reach Japan accompanied the crew. The Japanese aboard reportedly committed harikiri and were buried at sea. The sub had surrendered 200 miles east of Newfoundland this week to US naval forces.
A Brussels radio quoted as saying the wife of Rudolf Hess has been seized by French troops near Lake Constance. The report adds limited details and no confirmation from official sources.
