Althea Sherman purchased a Congregational church near McGregor for 1050 dollars to stop its conversion into a beer tavern. Her father helped build the church about sixty years ago and the purchase preserves the church’s future.
Corning night marshal S R Keesler and marshal O G Harshaw wear their newly purchased uniforms. The city council approved the purchase under a theory that citizens respond better to officers in uniform, as prior officers wore plain clothes.
Marshalltown reports plans to underwrite the 1937 Tallcorn exposition begin this week. Chairman Will A. Lane says 1936 profit was about $1,000 and guarantees for 5,000 will be sought to book attractions.
Mrs. George Brown, 57, of Le Claire died at her residence from drinking a poison she mistook for medicine. Scott County Coroner W. F. Shelley ruled the death accidental.
Burglars entered the Spirit Lake Anheuser Busch plant after forcing a rear door. They found a panel truck with ignition keys, backed into a refrigerator, and stole 479 pounds of venat and $40 from the till before fleeing.

Saginaw Michigan May 19 thousands of union workers walk out at a major power plant serving 500000 people in 187 towns shutting electric power to Owasso Saginaw Bay City and part of Flint two hours after the strike began. In the evening the plant’s 1500 workers were off work and darkness threatened. In another city, South Bend seven thousand Studebaker workers were laid off as the plant closed due to the strike.
One man is arrested in a crime spree tied to Eldon while Washington buzzes about possible resignations on the Supreme Court this summer. Speculation centers on Chief Justice Hughes and Justices Sutherland Brandeis as retirements loom during the June to October recess.
Thos. Thompson died at his home in Brighton after a heart attack suffered Monday. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:30 PM at the Methodist church with Rev. William Noland officiating and burial in Brighton Hillcrest cemetery. He was born July 6, 1860 near Beighton and lived in Germanville Fairfield Burlington before moving to Brighton in 1906. He owned a general store, ran a lightning rod factory and a condensed milk factory, and recently sold a ladder factory to a Cedar Rapids firm. Survived by his wife Hannah and four daughters Lena Eckhert Char a Dutton Bertha Mangold Ethel Taylor and four grandchildren. A brother preceded him in death.
Rev. Charles Cassidy of Des Moines, substitute at St. James in Des Moines, rode out the Graettinger storm in Palo Alto county. Reports say the Graettinger Catholic church was damaged and a tree struck Father John Kelly’s home, though Cassidy was uninjured. Cassidy, a local native, was in town for three weeks assisting Pastor Henry Corcoran who is traveling in Europe.
The report notes bor troubles risk a quick settlement, with an early arrangement expected by tomorrow. Officials anticipated a prompt conclusion to the matter.

Capt. Jay Brown announced an annual inspection of Troop F, 113th Cavalry, at 8 o clock Friday. The event will take place at the troop field beside the stables on the town's south edge with Major Lester J. Sprinkle of the 114th Cavalry Topeka Kansas slated as inspecting officer, returning from last year.
Washington county board of supervisors reviews 1700 refund or credit applications under the new homestead tax exemption law. County Attorney Stewart will consult Des Moines officials to finalize procedures, and auditor Grecian notes 3400 blanks printed as daily applications continue arriving. Taxpayers must file by June first.
A burglar entered Fred L. Stewart hardware store on North Iowa Avenue by a rear basement window and moved to the main store room. The heist was discovered when the store opened, with a second hand pistol later reported missing.
C G Schmoeller announced plans to construct a modern design house at 702 South Iowa Avenue on the site of the old Holden house. Excavation starts this week with basements first, using salvaged lumber. this marks his fifth new home in Washington as part of a long term building program.
The owner plans a colonial patterned home on the west end of the Holden lot facing South Iowa, with a future east end residence facing the east and west street. The site can fit two houses and will enhance the street's appearance, the builder says, placing the project on a premier town location.

Three gunmen stage a drunken crime spree across Eldon and Fort Madison areas. Lemar Richards of Keokuk claimed by police as a suspect after being captured by baker Paul Atwood. In Eldon the trio used a beer parlor to coerce theft then fled. Atwood defended him with a bakery mixer. In Fort Madison garage owner L C Burton was forced into a car as two burglars robbed a Plymouth and stole cash before escaping.
Elizabeth Lintz 72 wife of Frank Lintz died at her home near Richmond after a three month illness. Funeral 9 in Holy Trinity church Richmond with burial Holy Trinity cemetery. Born July 5 1864 in Iowa she lived near Richmond most of her life. Survived by husband sons Leo Fred George Teresa at home and Anna of Iowa City two grandchildren Marguerite and Mark Linty. son Will preceded her in death three years ago.
