County auditor Miss Ethel Greeian said ballots for the June 4 primary will be ready next Monday to serve residents needing absentee votes. Voters unable to attend on election day may apply at the courthouse or have ballots mailed to homes of the sick and disabled with safeguards in place.

Manchester May 19. W J Mack 34 of Oelwein died three miles west of Manchester when his car failed to negate a curve struck a telephone pole. The car overturned and Mack was thrown 15 feet from the wreck, breaking his neck.
Des Moines May 19 reports show Iowa hit a 104 degree high, tying the May record set in 1895. Federal meteorologist Charles D Reed says the heat will persist with little chance of cooling rains through Monday. Inwood posted 104, Carroll 54 as drought widens across the state.
Gerald E. Edwards of Washington and Maybelle Margaret Malik of Laurens obtain a marriage license, as do Arthur Mager of Davenport and Lois Lee Ross of Davenport.
Newburyport Massachusetts May 19 A maniac started seven fires in Newburyport flooding the city with smoke and spreading across four blocks. Firefighters from 15 towns battled the flames as a still wind fanned the blaze and forced evacuations. By nine o clock this morning the fire was under control with one million dollars in losses and several injuries to firemen.

Funeral services for Mrs. A J Booth, 80, will be at 4 p m Sunday at L A Jones funeral home with Rev A A Wing presiding. Burial is at Elm Grove cemetery. She died at 11 30 p m last night at Washington county hospital after a hip fracture and years of ill health. She was born Mary Baker in 1854 in Effingham Indiana and came to Washington county in 1857. Her family settled near Prairie Flower, later joining Washington Baptist church. She married Alfred J Booth in 1873 and lived in Kansas before returning to Iowa. Surviving children include Mrs Winnie Gordon, Mrs May Dawson, Mrs Elsie Moore, Merritt Booth, and Grover Booth. three children died in infancy or childhood. She leaves eighteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
In Minneapolis May 19 violence erupted in the produce market district as 5,000 truckers vote on arbitration measures. One man critically injured and several struck by stones. a truck was demolished during blockades. 127 strikers arrested. police to hire more officers.
Sherm Watson of the Washington De Molay chapter took first place in the district oratory contest at Iowa City yesterday, earning eligibility for the state contest. A Washington delegation attended the district meeting, including James Sehmoeller Bob McFarland Louis Thornton Paul Kyle Richard Johnson and Edenall Brown. Mrs. F A Mayhew, recently discharged from the Washington county hospital, returned home this morning.
