Iowa City physicians Dr. Elmer L. Degowin Dr. John E. B. Harris and Dr. E. D. Plass earned a good medal at the St. Louis AMA meeting for practical blood preservation techniques used in transfusions.
Maquoketa municipal power plant workers learned the shower room glass is installed with the wrong side showing. Until the panes are reversed, the lights in the shower room will remain off.
Edwin Ford Piper, 68, English professor at the State University of Iowa for four years, died of a heart attack at home. A noted verse writer, he was to be guest speaker at the May commencement supper. Survived by his wife Janet Tressle Piper, Nebraska poet, and son Edwin F. Piper II.
DES MOINES Gov. George A. Wilson proclaimed June 5 to 10 as state soil conservation week urging farming to maintain soil fertility and curb waste of our soils.
Federal meteorologist Charles D. Reed reports Iowa corn planting at 70 percent, with daily averages around 700000 acres. He notes planting is about six days ahead of the usual pace, with the northern half at 75 percent and the southern half at 66 percent.
Representative Clare Hoffman introduced a resolution calling for a five member house committee to probe John L. Lewis and his mine workers union. Questions cover union coercion to join, spending to influence workers, potential mass picketing or force to halt work, and any government assurances that armed forces would aid the union if state troops tried to permit workers to resume jobs.
At a Washington Centennial commission meeting the plan to organize a Whisker club to boost business men growing beards until after the August centennial is announced with Al Goddard named chairman. A sunbonnet club for women with hoop skirts is also proposed to evoke early Washington history and support the celebrations. The scene includes pageant preparations with John B. Rogers company handling the production and a large cast planned.
Chairman Al Goddard of the Whisker club movement leads the Washington Centennial effort by becoming the first member of the Washington Whisker club. He did not shave this morning and says he will not until the centennial celebration ends.
Judge Bechly arrived in Washington expecting several days of court but most matters were not ready. Two jury cases were set for early next week. one settled and one continued, so neither will be tried. Petit jurors scheduled for Monday are excused subject to possible recall. Foreclosure suit John T. Tucker administrator vs Charles E. Horning and others proceeded as first case.
Defendants were granted leav e to file a cross petition and the case is expected to be ready for trial next week. Judge Beehly planned to return to his Montezuma home late today.
Crowds in Montreal greet the royal couple as the king and queen arrive by royal train. Military units parade and guards in scarlet uniforms escort them to the Windsor hotel amid drums and cheers from hundreds of thousands of spectators.
Dr A Klafenbauch of Jews City head of the crown and bridge department at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry gave a table clinic on crown and bridge work at the Washington County Dental Society monthly meeting last evening. Eight county dentists dined in the private dining room of the North Side cafe, and the clinic was held there after dinner.
Supt. E A Ralston announced the names of Washington Schools teachers who have signed contracts for the next year. Most assignments remain as now, with tentative class or grade changes possible and few changes in staff overall. Names listed cover high school, junior college, and various grades, plus secretaries and a nurse.
Dean Harland Mead announces 16 candidates for the 1939 Washington Junior College graduation ten men and six women. The list includes Ruth Dupuis Frances Fisher Betty Hamil Marguerite Hardy Doris Klepfer Bertha Mae Reinert Loren Dickinson Everette Finke William Fry Thomas Gray Donald Griffith Rex Hazen Glen Miller Gifford Morrison Vernon Stagner Samuel Wittmer. The commencement exercises will be held June 1.
Washington High School Principal George Fields announces 87 boys and girls as candidates for graduation in the 1939 class. The list includes Phyllige Ahrens, Mildred Anderson, John Anderson, and many others with varied middle initials and surnames, reflecting a large class.
Principal Miss Ethel McCreedy announces the Washington Junior High School class of eighty-one students who will receive certificates for enrollment in high school next fall. The list includes Harry Anderson, Billy Arnold, Jean Atchison, Genevieve Baker, Max Bales, and many more.
The Senate approved a record breaking 473 420 000 naval appropriations bill to fund the expansion program.
The House today passed the omnibus rivers and harbors bill after reducing project authorizations from 120 million dollars to 83.7281 million. The bill now advances to the Senate.
Police and British troops clash with Jewish demonstrators in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv as riots and arson erupt over the British white paper. Incendiaries burn government offices and archives. 35 Jews and two Britons injured. A general strike begins at dawn in Tel Aviv.
A Burlington railway engine pulling a freight train derailed near East Second Street while entering the Washington yards. The engine tender stayed on tracks, no injuries reported, and the engine is to be replaced on the track this afternoon.
Concrete has been poured on 1351 of 1740 feet from South Iowa avenue to Elm Grove cemetery and two shifts work daily. If weather holds, paving should finish by Memorial Day week, with paving and setting likely by the holiday. A 130 foot concrete connecting road inside the cemetery will raise the entrance by about fifteen inches and improve access.
