John K. Manley Sr aged 70 who forgave his son after a gunshot wound died in Miners hospital. He was shot May 6 at his farm southeast of Albia after a dispute over his late wife and mother’s estate with son John K. Jr.
Harold Royer of Dallas Center travels to Nigeria in June to become superintendent of a leper colony in Garkida. The 1,000 mile inland colony is hard to reach during the rainy season with 250 miles passable only by horse. Royer, his wife, and two children will accompany him.
Funeral services planned in Sioux City for John L. Tuttle who died from a hemorrhage after a 10 minute coughing attack caused by food lodged in his windpipe. The forceful cough ruptured a blood vessel in his esophagus.
The state board of parole adopted a ruling effective July 1 requiring visitors who wish to discuss parole matters to submit a written request 30 days before the appointment.
Waterloo report says Mrs Lena Sherman widow of Baren R Sherman who guided Iowa from 1882 to 1886 died at her daughter Mrs D W Dickinsons home in Glendale California Relatives were informed Burial will be at Vinton beside her husband She was over eighty and spent most of her life in Vinton.
Burlington Iowa soap maker receives a Veterans Administration order for over one million pounds of soap valued above eighty thousand dollars. The shipment will occur in the latter half of this year starting around July and will go to customers nationwide from Washington DC.
EMMETSBURG. Experiments in producing new potato varieties are under way 22 miles southeast of Emmetsburg on a peat farm. The varieties, labeled C and L, are described by an Iowa extension service horticulturist as pivotal to the potato industry, in the same vein as hybrid seed corn was to corn growers.
A two year old girl Robby Jean Stanford fell from a second story window at her parents home in Fairfield but escaped serious injury. She woke with a scalp cut and resumed her nap.
Army trucks moved a large metal gondola and instruments through Burlington bound for Rapid City South Carolina where the stratosphere attempt will begin next month. Officials expect to reach the Dakota base by Tuesday night and plan to pick up 7500 pounds of lead shot ballast in Omaha on Saturday.

Des Moines May 18 Indictments of Eugene Fueling former chairman of the Iowa Democratic State Central Committee and Harold M Cooper ex chairman of the liquor control commission are cited by Feuling as part of a systematic Republican plot to discredit Democrats. Cooper charged with public official interference and Feuling with failing to report campaign contributions. Feuling to be arrested and post bond.
Mrs. Marjorie Boshart and her sister Miss Alice Goldsmith of Wayland were seen shopping in town yesterday.
Young people from twelve churches in the county and visitors plan to attend a Washington county Christian Endeavor rally at the local Presbyterian church Monday evening. A 6 PM covered dish supper precedes officer elections reports and an open forum. The three act play Robert and Mary will be staged. Admission is free with an offering. Special numbers will be between acts. District President Eva Diller will conduct the forum. County officers include President Kathryn Little and secretary treasurer Cora Mae Hotle.
The State Federation of Labor notes that contracts between manufacturers and merchants setting a minimum resale price are authorized by the act.
In Iowa City Jake Potter received a fortune telling from six gypsy women who blessed him and then stole his money. After the ceremony Potter found his pocketbook missing, with $138 gone and he reported the loss to police.
Dr J M Lloyd learns a Rome world war era photograph of himself and Captain Klein has resurfaced in a wartime American Legion Monthly. A Bath New York man says a woman with Red Cross ties held negatives from riveria scenes and seeks owners. Lloyd, Klein unidentified, officials ask readers to help identify them.
District officers named at the DeMolay conclave included Master councilor Don Smiley of Davenport senior Court Hawley of Muscatine junior John Gilbert of Fairfield scribe Lloyd Gerdom of Burlington treasurer Hilary Soucek of Iowa City and advisor RK Means of Washington. About 140 couples attended the dance and 141 members were present during the day with 17 initiates. Seventeen candidates received the initiatory degree by Muscatine and the DeMolay degree by Washington including Cecil Woodford Allen Hampsher Maurice Putman Billy Rawn Claire Norton David Pearson Cloid Willits Jr James Campbell Harold Thomassen Donald C. Davis Roy Grecian and Le Roy Riley. Washington had about 42 DeMolays.
Des Moines May 18 Iowa farmers expect 43 million dollars in 1935 corn hog benefit payments from the AAA allotments. Polls of 70 of 100 Iowa counties forecast 21.5 million for those counties and total state payments of about 43.0 million, with per head and bushel reductions explained.

The Dutch town of Pella hosts its first annual Tulip Time festival featuring Holland relics, quaint displays, and public entertainment. Pella high school students perform the Dutch opera Tulip Time while a Dutch band plays. Mayor T G Fultz serves as master of ceremonies. Merchants offer Dutch foods and novelties. Pella plans a Dutch village at West Ond Park after purchasing 1,000,000 tulip bulbs.
Mrs. W. E. Jones of Cotter spent Thursday at Wayland and attended the Wayland High School operetta. Her nephew Billy Boshart participated in the program.
Reserved seats for the Washington high school senior class play New Fires go on sale at Phillips and Hebner's next Tuesday morning for twenty five cents. The production is set for May 23 and 24 with a cast led by Stephen Santry Catherine Masson Olive Santry and others. The play is a 1935 domestic comedy written by Charles Quimby Burdette, same author as Shirt Sleeves, which won first place in the high school survey by Players magazine. The big Shrine event in Iowa centers on Davenport on May 28 with invitations sent to every Noble of the Mystic Shrine in Iowa. More than 6,000 are expected for the All-State Ceremonial as a motor caravan forms for Bala. The Abu Bekr white horse patrol draws crowds with an anticipated 50,000 witnesses to the Shrine Parade.
