Loren Collins, 20, a farm worker on the Peter Hahn farm four miles south of here, died while plowing on a slope. His tractor flipped after a sharp turn and crushed him. The accident was witnessed by his brothers and Brahnsen who were nearby fencing.
DES MOINES Four men have declined Governor Herring’s bid to fill the vacancy left by Harold M. Cooper who resigned April 26 as chairman of the Iowa liquor commission. Declinees include F Hubbell Des Moines Maj Gen Mat A Tinley Council Bluffs W D Evans Hampton and Gardner Cowles publisher of the Des Moines Register and Tribune.
Miss Margaret McGeer, who spent 56 years teaching in Jefferson and Henry counties, received a chair from her co teachers and Mount Pleasant school officials. Dr. Harry E. Jacques of Iowa Wesleyan College presented the gift.

Clinton school board cuts one week's deduction per year, saving teachers about $9,000 overall compared with 1934. The change reduces payroll deductions from two weeks to one week while adjusting salaries for next year.
Mesquakie Indians begin their annual spring rites at McIntosh Hill on the reservation. The ceremony is one of four season observances among the Algonquin tribes sharing language and customs.

Weather records show the first sixteen days of May 1935 were cooler by about 30 degrees than the same period in 1934. May 1 began at 55 degrees, with highs ranging 52 to 61 and a 2.80 inch total precipitation, over twice last year’s May rainfall. rain fell on ten of sixteen days.

Washington May 17. The advisory board approved 1 091 802 200 in projects and urged immediate use of more than a quarter of the unemployment fund to create 7 000 000 jobs by July 1 1936. Iowa received 4 991 664 for roads and streets and 5 600 679 for railway grade crossing elimination plus 2 859 180 for Hayden Cartwright highway funds.
J. M. Kelly grand knight and Joe Pieper of near Kalona will represent the Washington council Knights of Columbus at the state convention in Dyersville Iowa. Seventy two candidates will be initiated Sunday and convention sessions open Monday morning. The local men will join the Burlington delegation leaving Sunday morning for a three day trip.
Ruth Cunningham of Washington Iowa will teach home economics in Rodman public schools near Emmettsburg as announced today. The post marks a new assignment for Cunningham in the Rodman education system with duties to begin this academic term.
County Agent W. J. Roudabush said plans are nearly ready for a full offensive against chinch bugs using a state plan from H. C. Aaberg and federal input. An organized team including a FERA engineer will aid, with operations possibly starting within a month if conditions worsen. A two week hot wet spell could trigger a soil fungus to kill the pests, reducing need for artificial control.
