Ammonia Spill Fatality In Prairieburg Iowa
Mabel Woodward, 66, of Prairieburg died after inhaling ammonia from a ruptured tank truck at FS Cooperative. Authorities say she moved her car from the scene and had a history of heart problems.

Break-ins and thefts reported in Washington area
Washington Police report a break in at Washington Junior High School with a rock shattered window and a cardboard placard pushed out in the office. No items were reported stolen. Deputies investigated the theft of 10 lambs from Jim Hotchkiss farm south of Washington. Lambs valued at $50 each, taken likely Sunday, with an unwired gate and vehicle tracks found nearby. No suspects identified.

Festival of the Arts at Washington Junior High Thursday
The annual Festival of the Arts will run 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Washington Junior High School. Sponsored by the industrial arts and art departments, it features student displays and demonstrations in prints paintings drawings photography ceramics wood and wire sculpture pottery Batik weaving and more. The junior high jazz band will perform and ninth graders will demonstrate the potter's wheel. Carter vows health plan and welfare overhaul in speech

Torture claim ties Manila officer to electroshock abuse
An emaciated 35-year-old woman, freed after State Department intervention, identified Lt. Eduardo S. Matillano in a lineup as the officer who allegedly tortured her with electric shocks in a Manila prison. She accused five officers who questioned her, including the one who whispered he would never be forgotten. Herrera, head of a slum citizens group, had been arrested March 25 for organizing a protest against Marcos martial law. she was released Friday after U.S. embassy officials spoke with her.

City approves oiling contract and city upgrades program

Tax cuts ease burden for many as 1978 forms simplify
Three-fourths of American taxpayers using the standard deduction will file easier tax forms next April 15 and pay less tax under a Carter administration bill. The measure, awaiting signature, expands the standard deduction to 3200 for couples and 2200 for singles, delivering an average 121 dollar cut to standard users while sparing itemizers. It also adds credits for the elderly, delays some reform provisions, and extends old rules for certain chicken farmers and oil drillers.
