Washington County turns Lincoln Elementary into a measles vaccination center after noon Thursday inoculating 440 children ages one year and up. Other county clinics held the same day in different communities.
CAPE KENNEDY (UPI) The Apollo 10 astronauts Thomas P. Stafford John W. Young and Eugene A. Cernan suited up for a final rehearsal on simulators to test launch readiness for the Sunday mission around the moon. Weather forecasters trusted a 12:49 p.m. takeoff with a risk of thundershowers, while the crew enjoyed a preflight rest and light exercises in the moonport. The University of Northern Iowa has had only five presidents in its 92 years of existence.
Terry Ray Allison, 19, son of Mr and Mrs Merle Allison of 417 East Main Street Washington and a freshman at Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls, drowned while swimming in the Iowa River Thursday night. Funeral services for the remains were announced.
Lt Gen Lewis Hershey on Armed Forces Day pledged to remain head of Selective Service until he is ill or fired. He dismissed protesters outside the luncheon and noted the lottery draft plan, arguing it would bring youth certainty and credit for the program to the right people.
