UPI reports Congressman Adam Clayton Powell left for Buffalo to assess campaign funds for a possible New York mayoral bid. Powell said $525,000 has been raised and he needs about double that amount to pursue the nomination.
Justice Abe Fortas resigns, creating a vacancy on the U S Supreme Court and prompting President Nixon to consider replacements for Fortas and Chief Justice Warren. Warren plans to retire at term end, while Fortas cites the court’s welfare. Fortas defends his record amid Wolfson family foundation concerns, and White House says no immediate nominees are named.
Gov. Robert D. Ray signed legislation giving him authority to appoint the Iowa Development Commission director. The annual salary set at 25 000 to 26 000. The post was previously appointed by the commission and the salary ceiling was 20 700. A committee has received several applications and an appointment could come soon. Ray said the move is key to revitalizing industrial development in the state.
President Nixon urged Americans to hold him accountable as he proposed a new one year peace plan. The Iowa Senate approved a bill to raise truck license fees and allow 65 foot double bottom trucks on four lane highways for a $150 annual permit, sending it to the House amid doubts it will pass. The measure would lift the 60 foot limit, raise fees to 1320 for 36 ton trucks, and boost road funds, with opposition worried over special interests and extra highway traffic. Apollo 10 astronauts Thomas Stafford John Young and Eugene Cernan flew twin-jet T38s over central Florida at 10 000 to 20 000 feet to simulate weightless space sensations and prevent airsickness before their Sunday moon orbit launch. The Iowa Senate on a 45 to 9 vote rejected a helmet mandate for motorcycle operators. Lawmakers allowed withdrawal of an amendment that would have required headgear approved by the State Department of Public Safety on public highways. The proposal came from the Senate Law Enforcement Committee to a House bill setting motorcycle rules of the road.
A task force of 8,000 American and South Vietnamese troops captured the A Shau Valley stronghold near the Laotian border. Officials said this operation, along with battles around Saigon, raised the Communist death toll to over 2,000 in the offensive, with about 200 Americans dead.
Weather report for Iowa notes variable cloudiness tonight with a chance of showers or thundershowers, especially northwest, possibly reaching the extreme southeast by morning. Warmer conditions expected in the east, with overnight lows in the upper 50s to low 60s. Friday remains mostly cloudy with shower chances and highs from the 70s to the upper 80s in the southeast.
