Fred Speed to Open Independent Market in Washington
Fred Speed will operate a new independent market in the Washington room formerly used by Atlantic and Pacific. He leases from Mrs. Ralph Dougherty and plans to open by about the first of June using purchased fixtures and new stock, following A P closing its Washington store to focus on larger markets. Speed, manager since 1939, served in the Army Air Corps three and a half years and returns to local management. The old stock will be removed and the room remodeled for the new venture.

VFW Memorial Services Held For Three Post Members
At the Washington county VFW post regular meeting last night Commander Marsh Atkinson led a rifles and memorial service for three members who died during the year Jack Longer Frank Hudspeth and Bob Swartzendru ber. The post received ten rifles from an Idaho army arsenal which Dave McGaffey is cleaning up. They will be used in future observances.

Death Claims Ralph Waggoner After Illness
Ralph E. Waggoner, 55, died at his home near Washington at eleven this morning after a period of illness beginning last October. Funeral services are planned for Friday at 2:30 p.m. at L. A. Memorial Day Observance Plans By Local Veterans Post

At a special meeting the Washington city council authorized the airport committee to enter a contract with Lloyd Scott and Mrs Ralph Scott to lease the municipal airport with council approval. The city will continue the same management as before. Washington May 15 The soft coal wage talks broke off indefinitely after operators rejected John L Lewis’s demand for a 70 million welfare fund. President Truman vowed to use all powers to prevent a resumption of the strike when the truce ends as reconversion chief Snyder warned of further deadlock. Brighton man suffers severe eye injury at county yards
John Mulligan of Brighton sustained a serious eye wound this morning when a wire end pierced his upper eyelid and entered the eyeball while cutting cable. He was transported to University hospital Iowa City then to the county hospital with about a fifty percent chance of saving sight. Tickets go on sale at the high school door this evening.
