Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd lands at the Canal Zone returning from two years in Antarctica. He praises his crew’s loyalty, compares the effort to a football team, and outlines plans to prepare four volumes on meteorology geology and radio work. He will visit Boston and Virginia before finalizing reports.
Chicago May 14 A plan to honor Joseph Altmeier a volunteer law enforcer who died fighting bandits. He refused extortion demands leading to a bomb attack and bankruptcy. Clifford Barnes acting president of the association of commerce says Altmeier volunteered to help trap bombers and risked his life in the effort.
DeWitt Canton Robertson, aged 75, died yesterday after a two year paralysis decline. A lifelong Dublin farm resident born June 29 1854 he married Margaret Reighard in 1883 and leaves six children, ten grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Funeral is Thursday at 2 20 PM at New Haven church with burial in New Haven cemetery.
Dan Turner republican candidate for governor spoke in Richland before an attentive audience. Attorney General John Fletcher introduced Turner praising his wartime service and legislative record. Turner urged replacing personal property taxes with an income tax and claimed enforcement plus new taxes could cut personal tax burdens, saving farms and homes. Harding supported Turner and defended the income tax as fair, noting it targets earners without burdening non earners.
Senate conferees said the Hawley Smoot tariff bill returns to the Senate Friday for a decisive test on export de venture and flexible tariff provisions. If the Senate insists on its amendments, conferees may abandon pledges and seek renewed conference with the House to reach a compromise.

In Providence R I Catherine Higgins won 100 damages after a wasp sting beneath a pie crust. The court action sparked a broader tax discussion as speakers argued that personal property taxes burden families and that income taxes in other states support economic growth.
The United States, in a Delaware federal court filing, accuses the Radio Corporation of America and nine related firms of a broad conspiracy to monopolize the radio industry. The 37 counts allege violations of the Sherman Antitrust Act, detailing cross licensing and patent pooling schemes to block competition.
Sioux City firm Booth & Olson submitted the lowest bid for paving primary road No. 161 from Ainsworth to Olds in Ames. If awarded, they will build the project with Wilson & Roth of Washington handling drainage flumes.

Indias government rushes police to Dharasana Salt Works to thwart a planned raid by Mrs Indira Naidu leader of the independence movement. A detachment from Jalalapur forms a barrier while Naidu gathers volunteers in Bombay before departure.
Muscatine claimed top honors in Class A and Kalona won Class PF in a district contest judged by a university panel. About 600 students from 33 schools competed as 714 papers were graded. Washington high school led in top ten placements with 23 of 28 entrants earning spots. Mary Mickey paced among leading Washington placers.
In Muscatine Ta Norman Baker and four associates in a cancer institute won a victory in court. Judge A P Barker ruled there was no foundation for a temporary injunction against Baker. The state’s petition sought a restraining order for practicing medicine without a license. The motion to dismiss was granted since statutes provide for a permanent injunction, not a temporary one.
The button carving department of the American Pearl button plant idle due to wage scale disputes. Yesterday workers joined a walkout and today only a few remain at work as other departments operate normally. No duration or settlement prospects are known.
Miss Hazel Kracaw of Mt Pleasant presented an engaging program last evening at the Methodist church under the Young Women's Home Missionary society. Ruth George assisted with a solo and readings, with Kracaw performing Dust of The Road a one act play by Kenneth Go kna. A good crowd attended and a notable sum was raised to support the society's work.
In Keokuk Iowa on May 14 Mrs Mary Beggeman of Iowa Falls was elected president of the Iowa State Chapter P. E. D. Mrs Gertrude Sebern of Fort Dodge was named first vice president Mrs Dale Carrell of Keokuk was chosen second vice president and Grace Sargeant of Cedar Rapids was named organizer The next meeting may be held at Grinnell though no formal announcement was made.
A brief report notes eleventh grade English correctness top in Marjorie Pratt and others. George Jones third in economics. Eleanor Eyestone and Verna Palmer among leaders in algebra and American history. Stanley Simpson tied for first in physics. Eleanor Ryestone tied for third in English. About sixty instructors corrected papers and many contestants came from other schools. Work finished by six o'clock yesterday evening.
Washington hearings before two senate committees feature Secretary Stimson and Secretary Adams discussing the London naval pact. Admiral Pratt testifies the treaty offers a definite long term program for a stable navy, while Adams notes the pact contemplates a substantial US naval expenditure by 1936.
Auction at Cunninghat room raised forty dollars for the Y W C A. Combined with prior donations from B and P club Rojet club Y s Men s D A R and Montgomery Ward and local draymen and John Cunningham. Funds will install lavatory on second floor east end with a large transom over the door to improve airflow. Work to start soon after Y M C A board approval and hospitality committee efforts.
