Talent search opens at County Fair Festival of Talents
The Washington County 4 H and FFA Fair opens July 28 with the annual Festival of Talents Show. Auditions begin immediately and up to four cash prizes are awarded by the County Fair Board. Bill Riley will feature a winning act on his TV show before the Iowa State Fair.

Indians leave Tama school after sit in protest
About 50 to 100 Indian students and family members left South Tama Community High School after officials scheduled a 3:30 p.m. meeting with the faculty. The nine hour lobby protest, led by Indian student Ben Bear, spurred boycotts and grievances over Indian studies and teachers. Police on scene reported no damage as a large security presence waited for the discussion.

Ammonia Pipeline Leak Triggers Evacuations Near West Chester
A Gulf Central Pipeline Co substation near West Chester released an undetermined amount of anhydrous ammonia after a relief valve malfunction. Four or five farm families were evacuated as a precaution, and about 2,200 gallons of water were used to dissipate the vapor while winds remained calm. No injuries reported, repairs completed by 7:30 a.m.</span>
