Floyd Merritt 28 of near Central City died after a shotgun discharge while climbing a fence near his home. He had borrowed the gun from his father via a brother in Waubeek and went to shoot ground squirrels spotted on newly plowed fields.
The Humboldt Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a band festival again this year with a tentative date June 5. About a dozen concert and marching school bands are to be guests. Cov. George Wilson is slated to speak at the dedication of the new bass rearing ponds in Humboldt that day.
Dr. P. L. Etter and Sidney Smith will chair a preliminary meeting for Memorial Day activities this Wednesday at 7 30 in the Legion rooms city hall. All patriotic groups including Spanish American War Veterans American Legion Veterans of Foreign Wars Women's Relief Corps Daughters of Union Veterans and Daughters of American Revolution are asked to send representatives. Adult leaders of the Boy Scouts and Campfire Girls are welcome.
Warden Foss Davis halted two convicts from the Anamosa reformatory May 13 by firing a shot at a fleeing car tire, ending their escape attempt. Ralph Herties, 10 year sentence for breaking and entering, and Delbert Puckett, for forgery, were later given five extra years for attempting escape.
Evidence for the plaintiff in the case of Blanche Greiner administratrix of the Daniel Greiner estate versus W. P. Hicks totaling 810,000 damages was completed before noon. The jury was excused until 2 pm as attorneys argued in judge's chambers. Key witnesses included Mrs Cardona Greiner and Franklin Greiner. depositions from Downers Grove formed most testimony.
Eleven Washington junior college students and four faculty members attended a music festival and conference in Des Moines last Saturday. Dean Harland Mead led discussions on program offerings and other college issues with Dr Walter Fella. Students Ellis Winke and Beverly Niffenegee spoke about this year’s standout school trip to Chicago with 34 participants.
Central Park plans the first 1940 showing of the illuminated centennial memorial fountain on Wednesday evening May 15. Chairman Frank B. Miller says the fountain is ready with machinery installed and lights added in the lower basin. The fountain will be tested in the afternoon before its inaugural dark program, drawing crowds from last summer.
Seventeen children received first holy communion at St James church Sunday May 12 at seven o'clock mass. Illumina were sung by the fifth grade. Washington Lumber and Fuel Co hosts a May Day open house at the lumber yard with a day of demonstrations. Representatives from factories will showcase products before a post driving contest with a cash prize for the winner at 5 PM. Anyone registering and present for prizes is eligible.

Harold William Cole, 22, of Brighton, is hospitalized with severe injuries after a Sunday morning crash on primary road No 1 near Washington. Ruth Keighard, 16, also of Brighton, suffered scalp wound and concussions and was treated at home. The wreck occurred when the borrowed car left the Walnut creek hill area and rolled into a ditch. Additionally a second crash on primary road No 22 east of Kalona involved Elmer Edwin Nelson, 25, and two Mediapolis men Floyd Rasmus, 32, and Roy Hendrickson, 28, all sustaining bruises and cuts after the wheel slide into gravel and a ditch.
General Farley invited to address dedication of Parley town hall costing 48500 dollars on May 22. He will also address the annual convention of Iowa postmasters in Burlington the day before. Parley is a Dubuque county town with 650 residents.
