Masons Plan Dedication of New Temple in Washington Iowa

Arrangements are complete for the dedication of the New Masonic temple in Washington Iowa set for Friday May 22 at 730 PM. Grand Master Prof John W Gannaway of Grinnell will deliver the principal address with other grand lodge officers attending. Open house will be held in the afternoon from two to five with Eastern Star White Shrine hostesses and Shields orchestra providing music.

Gibson Dies Suddenly At Home Aged 71

W A Gibson 71 prominent community figure dies suddenly at his home 2702 South Iowa avenue heart attack while working in yard body taken to Sherman funeral home awaiting arrangements. Survived by widow one son Gibson and seven daughters. formerly of north town and Washington resident for 23 years served on county board of supervisors city council and other public roles.

Five Men Sentenced in Boone Prohibition Case

Federal Judge Charles A Dewey sentenced five Boone men for liquor law violations tied to a distilling and distributing plant found by prohibition agents last year. Perry A Keister got 18 months for conspiracy and eight more counts plus a $500 fine. John Miller received similar terms with 14 months for conspiracy and manufacture. Other penalties included Ray McGuire 14 months and $1,000, H N Streit six months and $2,000, Ed Smith six months for illegal transportation. Appeals were filed by McGuire and Streit shortly after sentencing.

Rain Lifts Iowa Crops Despite Frost Hit Areas

May 13 Des Moines An brisk rains across Iowa improved crop prospects though Charlton area reports slow planting due to dry pockets. Deep soil moisture holds to one foot while frost damaged fruit blossoms and vegetables in lowlands. Corn planting remains just above average but germination is uneven with some fields needing replanting.

Girl Struck by Car Injures 10 Year Old in Brighton Road

Mary Hoesseltine ten year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Hesseltine was hurt when struck by a car in front of her home on the Brighton road near Washington. Her right leg chest and face injuries required hospital care and she may remain eight weeks at Washington county hospital. The car driven by Jesse Kolosie near Wellston struck her as she stepped from her teacher Misa Blanche McCarty s car. The girl is a Walnut school third grader whose parents moved from six miles SW of town to their present home about a mile away.

Y's Men vote to aid Red Cross tied to fiftieth anniversary

Y's Men pledge cooperation with the county Red Cross for observance of the fiftieth anniversary of the Red Cross in the United States. A committee including Clarence Wiele Julian Lattimore and Clarence Logan will confer with Red Cross chairman Dr J h W Eastwood to plan activities. Miss Althea Montgomery gave a vivid talk on her Europe trip, and Henry Bailey reported net proceeds of $207.39 from the Y's Men play Broad Way Jones.

Johnson County Scouts Planning Quarterly Court of Honor

The first quarterly court of honor for Boy Scouts will be held at the Methodist church at 7:30 p m Monday. Johnson County troops, scouts, and parents from towns including Iowa City and Washington County will attend. A speaker will discuss the hours for boys and Tenderfoot scouts in Rev A W Wenks county chair of the court will present awards. National Hospital Day Observed At Washington County Hospital

About 500 county residents toured the Washington County Hospital and the nurses home on National Hospital Day. They heard a 2:39 talk by Mrs. Hazel Spencer Sehans on parental attitudes affecting child behavior, toured maternity units, X-ray and nursery areas, and viewed equipment. Volunteers served refreshments as patients, babies and staff were highlighted, with roses, flowers and balloons enhancing the day.

Oil Tank Explodes in Oklahoma City Causes Fire and Injury

A large storage tank at Phillips Petroleum in Oklahoma City exploded, igniting three more tanks and a home. A two year old, Betty Jo Watson, was briefly burned as she was moved to safety. firemen contained the blaze about an hour after the blast though large vats continued burning and smoke rose over the city.

Oliver Stewart to Speak at Christian Church Sunday

Oliver Wayne Stewart of Chicago, president of the Flying Squadron Foundation, will speak at 11 a.m. Sunday May 17 in the Christian church. A longtime prohibition advocate and ex Illinois legislator, he travels nationwide as a prominent speaker. The Flying Squadron Foundation backs anti liquor efforts and law enforcement programs. Finger Prints Sought for Iowa Slayer Case

Nationwide circulation of circulars showing palm prints and fingerprints of the man believed to be the slayer of Sheriff Bred Sweet and Marshal Aaron Bailey in Washington county last June.
