The Fairfield Journal urges a city celebration this year to boost business and advertising. Washington has not celebrated in some time and local merchants are urged to participate as enterprising men travel to work and support the event. Wm Smith spent Sunday in Chicago and returned yesterday.
In Centerville, May 13 a young man Tedford Hemphill was arrested for shooting Miss Mamie Patterson in Unionville. The coroner's jury questioned suspects as public scrutiny ran high and authorities prepared to decide tonight.
A family gathering recalled the golden wedding of Mr and Mrs J A Henderson a year ago and their sister marriage anniversary with children at the home for dinner. Attending were R R Henderson Davenport Buchanan and daughter Etha Fairfield Burnside Oskaloosa and Frank Steck. The Rock Island railroad has a monster Wilson locomotive completed at Chicag o shops and arrived in Davenport Monday evening. It will be tested this week on a time limited passenger run to gauge performance. If successful, fourteen more of these large engines will be built for fast runs.
The advertisement claims Hall's Catarrh Cure can cure catarrh at all stages as a constitutional disease. It states the remedy is taken internally and affects blood and mucous surfaces, offering one hundred dollars for any case it fails to cure and inviting testimonials from KF J Cheney & Co of Toledo Ohio.
The park basin is undergoing repairs today witnessed by many who are joking with the workmen. The bottom and sides will be a new brick wall overlaid with cement. Samuel Manatt is home from the northern part of the state where he has been for some time past.
The Maryville Seminary board unanimously re elected the entire faculty for the coming year after suspending the rules. Prof Geo B Moore, a former Washington boy, is the president. Mort Bickford reports a man with a light near Samson and Montgomery's. The sheriff and Heath had earlier searched the area for wanted parties and thought they had them, but the alert turns out to involve oil wagon departures to neighboring towns. The sheriff expresses gratitude for the tip.
Central Station Iowa reports unseasonably hot and dry conditions with above average sunshine and high winds. Rainfall was light. Sunday showers extended over central and northern districts. Corn planting progresses, germination good, and grass and small grain advance. chinch bugs appear in southern districts. A possible ball game with Fairfield is uncertain. gossip about a newspaper man visiting Ottumwa for a Washingtonian bride. Social visits noted at the Hendersons in Oskaloosa.
