Al Hott, who has spent two years traveling for a California hardware firm, plans a visit to his parents. The piece recalls his past fame as a baseball pitcher in this area. The column also notes active local advertising in the JOURNAL and updates on Miss Adda Howland’s improving health.
Yorke, a about twenty, remains in Washington county jail facing horse stealing charges. The case centers on a horse stolen from Mr. Hunter near Wellman. Sheriff Teeter recovered the animal in Sigourney and tied the suspect’s tale to a professor in Sigourney who bought the horse for 17.50. The suspect claimed the money came from another man near Keswick, but the sheriff exposed this as false. Bound over to the grand jury in 300 dollars bond. A Sunday school convention for Dutch Creek and Franklin townships convened at New Haven Baptist Church. Rev. Jas Coffman led lessons on the first quarter, with several short talks by local leaders, a praise meeting, and afternoon music and speeches. A curious incident described a large bug removed from a young woman’s ear by a physician.
Sheriff Teeter found a bright two year old boy named C. W. Prosse wandering in railroad yards near Woodbine Iowa after a week away from home. He was returned to his parents who were unaware of his whereabouts.
Judge Dewey held a brief morning session and ordered the receiver paid five for services in the J. W. Moore versus J. S. Carson, M. B. Carson and W. A. Moore case. The court sustained the motion to dismiss the B. FE. Morris matter for late appeal. appeal dismissed.
Rev Dunning an old schoolmate of Rev Stark of Pawnee City Neb led a fine morning sermon reading Acts chapter twenty and focusing on one subject. He is visiting with his wife formerly Miss Eitie O Loughlin.
Wim Sutton has sold his Crawfordsville barber shop to Geo Ward of this city. The date Ward will take possession is not learned and Sutton has not yet decided his next move.
The Palma band performance Saturday evening failed to attract the usual Saturday crowd. The boys play good music but the reviewer suggests more street style tunes to better entertain and catch the audience.
The paper touts Hall's Catarrh Cure as the only proven cure for catarrh a constitutional disease. It claims internal action on blood and mucous surfaces and offers one hundred dollars for failure. The notice invites readers to request testimonials from J J Cheney & Co Toledo Ohio. A street parade precedes a local barn exhibition titled the Black King with a one cent admission. Cast includes Walter Williams Rodney Crail and others. Ed Page and Liv Hollingsworth visit Mt Pleasant asylum by bicycle.
Sometime during winter, Collett was sentenced for threatening his family with jail, a suspended sentence if he left town. he reportedly returned and abducted his oldest daughter, though details are unclear. The column also notes revived stock shipping, visits, local politics, and a state Republican delegate plan for Des Moines on July 15.
