Iowa Farm Outlook predicts higher cattle on feed and lower prices
Iowa State University outlook analyst Gene Futrell foresees an 13 percent rise in cattle on feed across 32 states to 9.6 million by April 1, with larger May and June marketing and continued heavy slaughter through summer. He notes weights rising, grass fed supplies, and beef facing stiff competition from pork and poultry, likely easing prices to around 26 to 27 for Choice steers by fall.

Feeder Cattle Prices Slide As Spring Outlook Darkens
Prices on feeder cattle declined through late April with fed cattle down over $1 per hundredweight from mid March. Despite this, Chicago Choice steer prices in late April stayed about $3 above a year earlier as beef demand supports cow calf markets. Economist Gene Futrell of Iowa State University cites limited beef tonnage gains, by product values, and strong red meat demand as factors. Projections warn of further price drops of $2+ into spring and summer as supply prospects remain soft.
