Joan Walsh, 1 daughter of Mr and Mrs E Walsh, fell 50 feet from a rock cliff at Eagle Point park. She suffered a fractured leg and other injuries as friends carried her a mile and a half by stretcher along railroad tracks to Mercy hospital. A similar prior accident at the same spot involved another child.
In Burlington a truck driven by Fred L. Miller with passenger John Fye of Yarmouth plunged from an embankment after the accelerator allegedly stuck. Fye, age 7, was killed. Miller, 54, was bruised but survived. They were en route to Peoria to deliver hogs to stock yards.
19 year old Hubert Edwards was killed by a North Western passenger train while walking with Frances Want near the north city limits along tracks north of Big Lake. Want, 16, was uninjured. Engineer Fred Sandeen and Fireman W B Hall of Boone staffed the westbound locomotive.
John Derr 35 of Grand Island Nebraska was arrested in Miami Oklahoma on April 15 for illegal license plates. He was brought back by Cass county Sheriff Harry Jordan to face livestock theft charges in southwest Iowa. Officers allege he is part of a live stock theft ring. A calf stolen from Merton Seymore of Maine Iowa and a heifer belonging to Wayne White of Audubon County were found at a Miami commission ward.
John B. Purcell a district court judge in Clinton for four years died after a lingering illness. Born in Clinton he studied law in Chicago where he taught Greek and Latin before returning to Clinton to practice with Barker Ellis and McCoy.
Governor George A Wilson was elected chairman of the joint committee to supervise construction of a 1.65 million state office building. Senator Donahue named ranking member. F S Emerson chairman of the legislative group. G T Kruester ranking member. Henry Burma secretary. The committee plans to proceed, with architects to be called in.
Des Moines May 12 The state executive council authorized the safety department to spend 25 000 dollars on equipment and supplies for renewing automobile licenses The renewal deadline is July 5 with work starting June 9 Karl W Fisher safety commissioner said Iowa soldiers may submit renewal applications from their current camps The largest expense item is 17 370 dollars for photographic paper used in license preparation
Over the weekend four traffic crashes were reported. A cream truck driven by Daniel H. Miller of Wellman collided with a bridge barrier on road 22 east of Ka tona, scattering milk cans. no injuries. Lloyd Singleton's car near Pleasant Plain collided with another near Brighton. one tender was torn off. Dave Edmondson, 15, of Ainsworth collided with a parked truck on an Ainsworth street. no injuries. Richard Hesseltine of Brighton struck a girl on a bicycle. she was injured slightly and rides away.
In Tulare California on May 12 a public address system was installed at Rankin Aero Nautical Academy near Tulare. A draftee in San Jose offers his car for 250 dollars to settle debts before entering the army. He explains he learned a new game of poker from Iowa farm boys and needs the money immediately to clear his obligations.
Ames reports Iowa farm product buying power at its highest since 1937. April index shows power up 94.2 points from a year earlier and 7 points from March. Rising farm prices, stable purchase costs, and higher beef and poultry output drive the farm economy outlook for 1941.
U S Army officials outline a mobile anti aircraft strategy to defend vital defense areas and population centers. Fixed defenses are deemed impractical nationwide due to gun shortages, with 40 anti aircraft regiments planned by June and balloon barrage units forming. Priority ratings will guide material allocation, while mobile units and experiments suggest viable defense without fixed concentrations.
Sweden plans a 50 percent rise in military strength focusing on infantry, with navy coast artillery and air force also expanding. Defense costs for 1939 1942 are pegged at about 5.3 billion crowns, largely funded by current revenues and loans, aiming to avoid a debt surge beyond 1942.
The Senate Commerce Committee voted 11 to 4 to approve a bill authorizing requisition of idle foreign ships in U S ports and defeating a bid to bar transfers to belligerents. Officials at the Office of Production Management favor a 40 percent cut in automobile production for the new model year starting August 1 to conserve materials and plants for defense. The OPM will request manufacturers reduce output in 1942 to about 3,000,000 units, as the industry had agreed to drop from 5,289,972 cars this year to 4,224,152 next year.
Sweden aims to stay out of the war under a policy of realpolitik while warning and readying its civil population for potential enemy attacks. Public shelters, ARP squads, and drills train residents to respond to air, land, or sea incursions as Sweden modernizes defense.
Dean Harland Mead Washington junior college announces 20 graduation candidates. Washington high School lists 92 names and 88 eighth grade finishers at junior high. Berlin reports Rudolf Hess, deputy to Hitler, disappeared after an airplane flight. A Nazi Party statement said a letter suggested mental derangement and fear Hess died by his own action. Radio Berlin, via London, claimed Hess had killed himself at six p.m. Saturday.
